藤沢 周平
1927‐1997。山形県生れ。山形師範卒業後、結核を発病。上京して五年間の闘病生活をおくる。’71(昭和46)年、「溟い海」でオール読物新人賞を、’73年、「暗殺の年輪」で直木賞を受賞。時代小説作家として、武家もの、市井ものから、歴史小説、伝記小説まで幅広く活躍。『用心棒日月抄』シリーズ、『密謀』、『白き瓶』(吉川英治賞)、『市塵』(芸術選奨文部大臣賞)など、作品多数(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

伊之助シリーズの第2段。元凄腕の岡っ引きが知人に頼まれ、本業(彫師)の傍ら探偵家業に勤しむうちに、江戸に巣食う巨悪を暴き出すという構図は前作と変らない。人情物の印象が強い作者が意識的に人生の暗黒面を描くシリーズにしたものと思われる。改めて作者の懐の広さを感じる。前作の「消えた女」という題名が平凡過ぎるのに比べ、本作は題名からして内容を強くイメージさせるものとなっている。

伊之助は、今回は川に浮んだ身元不明の男の調査から始まり、連続殺人魔に相対する事になる。捜査を進める度に一枚一枚剥がされて行く悪の皮。読者も心情的に伊之助と一体化して悪と向き合う事になる。これが藤沢氏の他の作品群に無い本シリーズの魅力であろう。そして、このハードボイルド・タッチのストーリー展開の中で、捜査時間を稼ぐ苦労、オバさんの井戸端会議を聞く苦労(これは重要な手がかりになる)等、ユーモアと市井の人々の機微の描写も忘れない。さすがと感心させられる。

江戸の暗黒面を描くという作者にとっては新境地のシリーズでありながら、ユーモアと市井の人々の機微の描写も忘れないという作者の懐の広さを見せ付けた秀作。

前作で、前の事件が片付いたらいっしょになると約束をした伊之助であったが、今作ではおまさとは結婚の約束までにはいたっていない。しかし伊之助の気持ちは前作と比べるとずいぶんと明るい。二人の中はずいぶんと進展してるみたいだ。今回の事件はずいぶんと陰惨な連続殺人なのだが、所々コミカルな描写が目に付くようになった。8~9時まで残業をする同僚を後目に（秘密の探偵家業の為に）定時出勤や早帰りを繰り返す伊之助と棟梁とのやり取り、などがそれだ。あるいは、長屋の女房の井戸端会議から巧妙に事件の情報を聞き出す、その会話の妙。この聞き取りは場所を変えて3度にわたって描き分けられる。よほど女性とのおしゃべりに付き合っていないとここまでは書けないだろうと思える上手さ、である。また、コミカルではないが、立ちまわりの部分も上手い。命が狙われること３回。いずれも剣ではなく、十手ではなく、柔術で切り抜ける。世の捕り物帖とは違う部分だ。

今回伊之助、１人の女性の命を結果的には救っている。「何のかのといっても、男は手前勝手が出来るが女は耐えるしかない。耐え切れずに自分の勝手に走れば、死んだ女房のようにわれとわが身を殺す羽目に陥る。」という悔恨の気持ちが強いためか、このシリーズを通して伊之助は常に女性の味方である。ホントに伊之助は「優しい」男なのだ。

元は凄腕の岡っ引でありながら、妻が無理心中したことから十手を置いて、今は彫師として働く伊之助を主人公とする藤沢版ハードボイルドシリーズの第２作です。前作から約１年、今度は知合いの同心から、殺されて川に捨てられた男の身元調べを頼まれます。男は身よりも無い、無口な男で、殺される理由もわからない男です。ただ、彫師としての仕事の傍ら、男の身元を探っていくうちに、江戸の街に潜む巨悪が浮かび上がってきます。
前作に比べ、より、サスペンス性を増しているものの、長屋の女房の井戸端会議から手がかりを得たり、彫師の親方・同僚とのやりとりなど、著者独特の江戸の市井の描写は相変わらずであり、藤沢ファンには安心してお奨めできる１冊です。
