　「大阪池田小児童殺傷事件、尼崎実子虐待致死事件、月ヶ瀬村拉致撲殺事件、神戸女子中学生手錠放置事件、池袋通り魔連続殺傷事件、恵庭ＯＬ殺人事件」など世間を震撼させた９つの凶悪事件のドキュメント。

　逮捕済みの当人への直接取材は無いが、親たちへの長時間にわたる取材や、住居周辺等への徹底取材により、当時のマスコミ取材では見えてこなかった、事件の奥にあるドロドロしたものがくっきりと浮き彫りにされていた。事件のおぞましさと同等にひどい現実ばかりで驚愕の連続だ。

　池田小事件を起こした宅間守の父の様子や生活状況は、守本人と似たり寄ったりでひどいすさみようだったし、蕩々と並べ立てる自己流の言い分にも唖然として言葉が出なかった。また、尼崎の虐待事件で、実の子を運河に捨てた女の母親が、この事件について唯一漏らしていた感想は「いくら悔やんでも、オノレのやったことじゃ」。娘を生み育てた母親の言葉としては、あまりにもひどすぎないか。凶悪事件を起こす人間が生きてきた背景を見ずに、事件を語ることはできないな、としみじみ思った。

この本を買った時も、読んだ後も、後ろめたさがつきまとった。
本としては面白かったが、あくまでライターの視点であり、
これで知った気になるのは大変危険。

これを読むと「周りにも問題がある」と思う人が多いのではないだろうか。
がしかし、この国はもともと加害者周辺に対する
”民衆による裁き”が根強い訳で、（時に被害者もその対象になる）

それを言ってしまうと、この本はただの下世話な大衆本になってしまう。

どんな宿命があろうと、耐えるものもいれば墜ちていくものもいる。
その境界線はとても重要なものだ。
そんな事をふまえて取材側はこのタイトルをつけたのではないだろうか。
そう信じたい。

　当時の報道では分からなかった、親戚へのインタビューなどが載っています。
　著者の推測などもおりまぜてある記事もあり、全てを鵜呑みにすることは出来ない文章もありますが、事件の他の一面をうかがい知ることが出来る本です。
