1947(昭和22)年、東京生れ。横浜国大卒業。ほどなくルポライターとして出発し、鮮烈な感性と斬新な文体で注目を集める。『若き実力者たち』『敗れざる者たち』等を発表した後、’79年、『テロルの決算』で大宅壮一ノンフィクション賞、’82年には『一瞬の夏』で新田次郎文学賞を受賞(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

山野井泰史・妙子夫妻のヒマラヤの難峰ギャチュンカンへの挑戦を描いたノンフィクション。沢木耕太郎のてらいのない文体が冴えている。あくまでソロまた最少の人員・装備で，自らの力だけを頼りに頂上を目指す山野井のスタイルは，危険もあるが読んでいて心地がよい。講談社ノンフィクション賞受賞。

巻末の池澤夏樹の解説には，「最も自由なクライマー」と題して以下の文章が記されている。

「泰史と妙子は全くの自由なのだ。すべてを自分たちだけで決められるように生活を，人生を設計している。あることをするのに，他人が提示する条件を容れた方がずっと楽という場合でも，苦労を承知で自分たちだけでやる方を選ぶ。それは本当に徹底している。その姿勢をぼくは自由と呼びたい。」

スポンサーを求めず，節約を重ねて登山の費用を貯金し，かつトレーニングを欠かさない。登山に名声や名誉を求めない山野井夫妻の生き方は，実に示唆に富むものがある。自己を抑制し，身の丈にあった「自己完結」的な生き方は清々しい。

稀有な登山家・山野井夫妻の壮絶な山登りルポ。
タイトル通り、まさしく凍りつく感じの危機の連続。
ほんとなんか壮絶な世界をまるで見てきたように描いた、
リアルな話のサスペンス的物語で、
しかもそこに夫妻の山を通した生き様が描かれていて、とってもよい本でした。

かつての沢木耕太郎のノンフィクションのように、
彼の存在が皆無に等しいのが特徴かな。
登山家本人が書いたような本になっていて、
それで沢木耕太郎が書いたというのがなんとなくとても読みやすい。

沢木さんが、夫婦愛について書くなんて珍しいなとは思ったのですが、そこは標高8000メートル弱。まさに極限状況での夫婦愛というのが、沢木流なんだと思います。
この本では遭難後、手術、リハビリ療養から再登山へと至るご夫妻の後日談も読むことができます。
にしても、沢木さんは、なぜこうまで極限状況における人間を深く追い求めようとするのでしょう？
そんな極限状況を描く沢木さんの洞察眼は、取材力や想像力の域を超えています。正直、登山用語がわからず、その場面を細かくイメージできない個所もありました。けれど、そんな危機状況における人間の心の裡は、そのひだ一枚までも、圧倒的な切迫感をもって読むことができました。09002
