コラムであってコラムではない。様々な人生をそれぞれ異なった文体で描く、なぜか気になる33編のノンフィクション。全体的に不思議な雰囲気を漂わせつつ、沢木節も相変わらずかっこいい。作品に登場する人たちは魅力的で、下手なサクセスストーリーものを読むより、よっぽど人生のことを教えてくれる。生き方が多様化する時代だからこそ、読んでおきたい。

沢木耕太郎さんの著作の中では最も好きな作品。
遠くへ、一人で旅に出る時には必ず鞄の中へ入れて行きます。

決して派手さはなく、淡々と、ひっそりと語られる33篇の「彼ら」の物語。

沢木さん自身があとがきで語っているように「コラムでもなく、エッセイでもなく、ノンフィクションでもなく、小説でもない」

そして「同時にそれらすべての気配を漂わせるもの」である文章は
ヒーローでもヒロインでもないごくごく普通の人々の生き様を温かく見つめる眼差しによって描かれています。
けれど決してウェットではなく、むしろ程よく乾いている感じがして
まったく押し付けがましさがなく、すんなり心に入ってきます。

すべてに対して「そういうのもありだよね」という肯定的な姿勢で接する沢木さんだからこそ書けた作品かもしれません。
何かに迷った時、自分に自信が持てなくて立ち止まってしまった時にそばにいて見守ってくれるような、そんな作品です。

有名無名も含めて３３名（重複含む）の人生が鮮やかに切り取られている。読了後、ある瞬間がその人の半生を象徴することを知る。「私ノンフィクション」を標榜して沢木自身が全面に出てくる作品が多いけれど、本作では基本的に沢木は黒子に徹して、さもその人のモノローグのような形で文章を紡ぎ出していく。「市井の人」「平凡な名もなき人」というカテゴリーでくくられてしまう人々のなんと個性的で豊かな人生だろうか。凡庸にこそドラマがある。村上春樹の「アンダーグラウンド」（講談社）を読んだときに感じたものが蘇ってきた。「下流社会」だとか「ニート」という言葉が巷を賑わしているが、たくさんの人生に思いを馳せることで「見えてくるもの」があるかも知れない。
