インドに行ったことがある人にはわかると思うのだが、インドは決して神秘の国ではない。どちらかというと哀しいくらいに俗っぽく、猥雑・混沌だ。騙しとボッタクリ、気が遠くなるくらいの非効率、そして沈没してしまった人々・・・・・。
この本を読むとそれらのものが一緒くたになって蘇ってくる。インド滞在時に慣れきっていたケロシンとハシシとインド人の腋臭の臭いがごちゃ混ぜになって漂ってくる・・・・。
この本は五感を刺激してくれる本だ。彼の地にいなくとも、あの時の感覚がよみがえってくる。インド旅行経験者にもお勧めする。

発行以来数多くの青年を宛てのない旅へといざなってきた麻薬のような本です。

実際、私も20歳の頃に本書を読んでバックパッカーになりました。

飛行機をあえて使わず、時間をかけて現地のローカルバスを利用する旅を続けることで

「地球の大きさを自分の体で感じる」ことができると作者は言っていますが

自分も旅を続けるうちにその意味がわかってきました。

本書を読み返してみると、深夜バスに乗りこみ、砂漠の中の真っ暗な道を疾走している時の期待と緊張が入り交ざった「あのドキドキ感」が再現します。

バックパッカーだった方は、本書を読んで、自分の熱い旅の体験を思い出しては如何でしょうか？

バックパッカーの経験はないけど、日々悶々と退屈な日常が続くばかりでつまらないと感じている人は

本書を読んで、作者の刺激的な旅を追体験してみてはいかがでしょうか？

（但、全てを投げ出して体1つで旅に出たくなってしまうかもしれませんので御注意ください！）

初めて読んだのは中学生の頃母に薦められての事だった。本の事はすっかり忘れ、数年前に旅をした。香港、インド、イラン、トルコ。沢木さんが訪ねた街を私も歩いていた。15年ぶりに深夜特急を読み返してみると、一気に過去の記憶が蘇ってきた。自分の旅行記を読んでいるようだった。自分の旅とリンクすることが多く驚いた。彼の観察力、分析力の成せる業だと思う。旅に出たことのない人も一緒に旅に出ることの出来る本。旅に出たくなる本。旅を思い出せる本。
