恩田 陸

短編集。
「六番目の小夜子」「夜のピクニック」のサイドストーリーや
SF、ホラー、さまざまに十篇のお話がつめこまれています。

こわいことなんか何も起こらない学園のお話から
犯罪にかかわるお話がいっしょくたになっているのに
すべてのお話に、こわいような、
どこか他のところからぎゅーっと操られ、箱につめられるような
じわじわとした迫力があり、
恩田ワールド全開です。

表題作「図書館の海」を含む全１０編の短編集。

1999年に「象と耳鳴り」にて短編の経験はあるが、あちらは同一主人公による推理小説なので連作短編になるのかな。完全な短編というのは初めての作品集。

他の恩田陸作品とリンクしている作品があるが、それはそれで、ファンでも未読者でも楽しめる仕様になっている。

表題作は名作「六番目の小夜子」の後日談であり、それを含め、ＳＦ、学園、ミステリ、ホラーと色とりどりのジャンルを網羅しているが、後味の残る、恩田陸独特の読後は健在。全作通して、らしいなあと思わされる。
そして「図書館の海」と言うタイトルは作品群全てを現した秀逸なものと思える。読後、何となく、中学校や高校の図書館のようなちょっと暗い、濁ったような雰囲気を味わえます。スッキリはしないけど、別世界な感じ。

…でもなあ、やっぱり恩田陸は短編より長編に向いていると思う。彼女の書く主人公各の人物の吸引力は、長編でこそ活きてくると思って仕方がない。

明らかな予告作品が２つ、後の大作となる「夜のピクニック」の前夜、今後発表されるであろう「グリーン・スリーブス」の後日談（？）が収められている。

この２作以外でも、ここで発表された作品を長編で書いてくれたらなあ…

短編が長編の一部になる手法は、村上春樹さんが得意としているところ。
この作品で恩田さんは過去にさかのぼったり、後日談を描いていたりしています。ぞくっとする切れ味の作品と、ほわっとする作品が同居しています。自分にとって恩田さんの長編は苦手です。短編の切れ味に偏愛しています。
