大学教授秘書の万由子は、変死した画家・高槻倫子の展覧会で突如デジャヴに襲われて倒れる。「あなたは母の生まれ変わり」と言う、倫子の息子と共に倫子の死の真相を探る万由子だったかが、彼女に不可思議な事件が襲い掛かる。

恩田陸の作品は、ジャンルを飛び越えた不可思議な世界観を持つものが多いのだが、この作品は、そのような不可思議な世界観を持たせつつ、単純にミステリとして見た場合もしっかりと一級品の完成度を併せ持っている。
主人公・万由子、大学教授の泰山、倫子の息子・秒、倫子から絵を送られた４人の人物…。とある童話になぞらえて表現した高槻倫子の想い、そして、その倫子にまつわる人々の想いと不安、それらが巧みに描かれていて、悲しいながらも美しいと言いたくなるような後読感が残る。
ある程度、ミステリ作品などを読んでいる人ならば、犯人自体は途中で読めてしまうかもしれないが、決して減点材料ではないと想う。

まさにタイトルのように美しく、しかしどこか恐ろしい感じのするお話でした。
読者を話に引き込むところはさすがで、冒頭からズルズルとこの本の世界に引き込まれていきました。ちょっと後ろを振り返りたくなるような恐怖感も魅力的でした。
が、私としてはあまりに話の流れがうまく展開されていたせいか、結末がいまいち腑におちませんでした。そういうものなのか…という感じで。
しかしそういった点も含めて後引く感じのある実に印象的な本でした。

恩田さんの本は、結構好きで読ませてもらってます。

そして今回もまたラストに驚きました。
毎回思うけれどこの本は特に思ったんです。

こうきたか！

その意味は、読んだ人にはわかるはず。
恩田ファンなら読んで損はないです。

装丁もリニューアルされてて、とっても好みなので★４つで。
