1956(昭和31)年、埼玉県生れ。成城大学経済学部卒。広告制作会社勤務を経て、フリーのコピーライターに。’97(平成9)年『オロロ畑でつかまえて』で小説すばる新人賞を受賞しデビュー。2005年『明日の記憶』で山本周五郎賞を受賞した(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

荻原浩にしては珍しい、というより初の短編集である。

’９９年から’０４年にかけて各社の小説誌に掲載された８編に、書き下ろし１編を加えた９編からなっている。いずれもホラーのジャンルに属する短編ばかりであるが、そこには生理的に恐怖を訴えるような物語は少なくて、お馴染みの“荻原ワールド”が健在だ。

ラインナップを挙げてみる。
「お母さまのロシアのスープ」―最後の一行に向かうストーリー展開がさすが。
「コール」（書き下ろし）―私が本書で一番好きな作品。見事な叙述ホラー・ミステリー。
「押入れのちよ」（表題作）―本編こそ“萩原テイスト”にあふれた佳作。青年と幽霊との交流が、そこはかとなく哀しくもあり、ほほえましくもある。
「老猫」―これは生理的な恐怖をおぼえる、正真正銘のホラーである。
「殺意のレシピ」、「介護の鬼」、「予期せぬ訪問者」（いずれも『小説すばる』が初出）―ブラック・コメディと言うかなんと言うか、怖いんだけれども笑えてしまう作品。
「木下闇」―クラシックなスタイルの正統派ホラー。
「しんちゃんの自転車」―「押入れのちよ」と根本的には同じようなジャンルの、読み終えてほっと安心する作品。

私は、本書を読み終えて、フジテレビの、タモリが案内役をつとめる『世にも奇妙な物語』を連想した。映像化不可能な作品もあるが、テレビかラジオのドラマにでもなりそうなものばかりだった。

ホラーは苦手です。夜トイレにいけなくなるし。
でも怖いもの見たさでこれを読んだ感想、この本のホラーは単に怖いんじゃなくて驚き。それに加えてまるで自分が悪いことをしているような言いようの無いゾクゾク感。
とにかく筆者の文章展開に、あっと感嘆の声が漏れてしまう。もちろんそれには最初から自分の思い込みで読んでしまっていたことに対する一抹の悔しさも含まれている。
あれ、これは単に自分の読解力に問題が？いやいや、きっと皆さんも驚くでしょ？「え!?」って、それこそ「目がガラス玉に」なるでしょ？なるはず、なるはず。
だから本書のどの物語も、夢中になる。

その中でも自分が1番好きだったのは「コール」。これはぜひ読んでほしい。最後の一文にぐっときました。涙が出そうになったよ。
とにかくこの「コール」は。読み終わったあとの安堵感と空虚感がたまらなく切なくなるんです。目に映る世界はこれ以上ないくらいキラキラしてるのに、行き場を失った自分の心が一人ぼっちでうずくまっているような、あの錯覚に落ちる。

怪奇な出来事に、涙あり笑いありの“荻原流”怪談ホラー9篇。
これが荻原浩さんの本でなければ絶対に買いません！
もう、表紙からして、恐ろしくて、こわくて。



しかし、“荻原流”とはいえ
■超恐いのが、
・「お母さまのロシアのスープ」
・「老猫」

正反対に、
■まさしく「これぞ荻原浩！大爆笑」は、
・「押入れのちよ」
・「介護の鬼」

■名作は、
・「木下闇」
押入れのちよ (新潮文庫)
