この小説は，数年前にテレビドラマ化されたことがきっかけで読んでみました．全体的に読みやすい文体で，第二次大戦末期の戦争当事国を舞台に史実を織り交ぜながら話が展開します．ノンフィクションとフィクションの絶妙なブレンドを感じさせます．様々な印象深い箇所があると思いますが，私は，一貫して「祖国(愛)とはなんぞや」を考えさせられました．

世界からみた祖国と自国の過去だけからしかみていない祖国の違い．この問題は，現代の世界でも決して過去のことではないと思います．
他にも祖国について同じ時代を題材にした小説がありますが，それとはまた違った視点＆切り口で新鮮味を感じさせる作品だと思います．

この著者のテーマではないかと、思わせる。人の情に答える、或いは、その人に対する自分の思いを全うする。それが、たとえ自分の命を危険にさらすことだとしても。自己犠牲の精神ではなく、自らを見出すためのその行為。結果など問題ではない。男になりたければ、是非読むべし。

　第二次大戦末期という極限、絶望の状況下にあって、必死に己の信じる道を進もうとする男たちの壮絶なドラマ。
　機密情報を入手し、これをなんとしても日本に伝えようとする二人の密使の冒険劇。国際関係を背景にしたスペクタクル活劇としてももちろん読み応えがあるし、重厚かつ繊細な筆致からはそれぞれの登場人物の苦悩が読みとれる。
　非常に密度が濃いが、一気にはまり込んで読み終えてしまうことができる。
