1962(昭和37)年、岡山県生まれ。早稲田大学第一文学部卒。’88年「揚羽蝶が壊れる時」で海燕新人文学賞を受賞。’91(平成3)年「妊娠カレンダー」で芥川賞受賞。2004年『博士の愛した数式』で読売文学賞、本屋大賞を受賞。翻訳された作品も多く、海外での評価も高い(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

同じ新潮文庫から出ている「薬指の標本」と似た印象の、
不思議で、ビターな感じの短編集。
「博士の愛した数式」のような、暖かさは、ほとんどなく、
結構、ブラックな描写もあるので、読む人を選ぶかもしれません。
何気ない日常の風景の隅に、ぽっかりあいた暗い穴を覗き、
得体の知れないものを見せられてしまった、
という感じにさせられる一冊です。

小川洋子さんの本は独特の時間が流れているように感じます。
特にこれといって事件がおこるわけではないのですが、
淡々としていて、けれどもきちんと心の奥に響くいているような・・・。

『まぶた』は短編集なので、ちょっとした空き時間に読めました。
不思議な人物や、興味深い人物が現れる、最終的にはちょっと切なくなる本でした。

独特なイメージの世界を堪能できる作品集。

それは非現実的なるものと現実的なるものが隣り合わせる世界でもある。たとえば、
　　クリーム色に光る中国野菜と、ジャムパン　
　　切り取られたハムスターのまぶたと、取引停止のクレジットカード
　　見知らぬ男に見守られ機内にて絶命する老婆と、恋人との喧嘩を気にかけつつ出かける取材旅行
　　もげた左腕・石の棺のようなプールと、ホットケーキの甘い匂い
現実と非現実。生と死、あるいは眠りと死。これらを隔てるものは薄皮一枚のように頼りなく儚い。そのことが「まぶた」というタイトルによって一層際立っている。

「リンデンバウム通りの双子」という一篇は、著者の近著『物語の役割』にて創作過程が明かされている（採用されなかったもうひとつの結末も）。合わせて読むと興味深いので、ご一読をおすすめしたい。

解説は堀江敏幸氏（堀江氏の著書『本の音』所収の一文に手を加えたもの）。
