宇江佐真理の時代小説は本当に読みやすい。
本作は男性主人公の武家物の人情話が綴られている。
内容は恋愛小説に青春小説をミックスしたような作品に仕上がっている。
他の宇江佐さんの作品と比べて、ほのぼの度においては飛びぬけているような気がする。

要因はズバリ主人公五郎太の性格に尽きる。とっても心優しい。

主人公のキャラがいいから、周りを取り巻く人々もとってもいい。

生活苦のために代書屋の内職をするかたわら、大好きな紀乃との結婚を果たすために必死に学問に励む五郎太が微笑ましい。
たまに喧嘩をするシーンなんかも上手く織り交ぜていて適度にやきもきさせてくれるところも心憎い。

代書に持ち込まれる騒動は１篇１篇人情味のある話が語られ連作短篇集ならではの特徴が!!出ていて作品全体としても機能している。
特に五郎太の師匠や恩師達（二階堂秀遠・橘和多利・大沢紫舟）の過去にまつわる話はどれも泣ける話となっている。
個人的なベストは「千もの言葉より」かなあ。

あえてファンとして苦言を呈すれば、最終編がちょっと書き急がれたような気がしてならない。
でもとにかく爽やかで暖かい作品なのは間違いない。

江戸時代の受験の実態もわかり、現代と同じく大変だったのだなあとちょっぴり切ない気分にもなりました。
女性の方、読まれて主人公に惚れてください。

昔も今も、人の悩みは同じなのですね。仕事、恋、家族、将来。代筆屋というのは今はない商売ですが、様々な想いで代筆を持ち込む人たちのドラマと主人公の人柄に惹かれて一気に読めました。五郎太さんにエールをおくりたくなります。

読了感が爽やかで、まさに春の読書におすすめの一冊だと思いました。連作集なので１話ごとに主人公の五郎太を支えてくれる人生の師が現れ、その人達との触れ合いの中で一寸ずつ成長する彼がうらやましいです。また江戸時代に学問を修めるのは一苦労だったと思うので、現代に生きる私達は、そういう点では恵まれてるのかなぁと考えさせられもしました。
