岩合 光昭
1950(昭和25)年生れ。19歳のときに訪れたガラパゴス諸島の自然の驚異に圧倒され、動物写真家としての道を歩み始める。以来、地球上のあらゆる地域をフィールドに撮影を続けている。作品は、「ナショナルジオグラフィック」誌の表紙を2度にわたって飾り、全世界で高い評価を受けている。主な写真集に『海からの手紙』(木村伊兵衛賞)などがある(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

普段見られないようなネコの習性を切り取った写真が主体の文庫本。

著者のキャプションがその場面のネコの動作、その後などを観察日記みたいに
添えて有り、知らなかった習性などが分かって、自分にとっては興味深い。

なにより、掲載された写真らが、その時のネコの表情をしっかりと
写しており、普段よりネコをそばに置く身としては理解できるだけに
微笑ましく、心が和む。

猫を飼われていて、写真を撮るのも観るのも好きな方、おすすめです。

　この本の主役は、いわゆる雑種というどこにでもいるごく普通のネコたちである。しかし、ネコには不思議な魅力があり、どこかで静かに人間を観察している。何食わぬ顔をして、また知らぬ振りをして。

　そんな普通のネコを探しながら各地を歩いた著者は、景色になじんだ彼らのやわらかな姿態を一枚ずつ写真に記録した。そして「ネコには頭があがりません」と恐れ入る。どこか神秘的で、心を見透かされているようなネコたちに、動物写真のプロも脱帽されたようだ。

　そして著者のコメントがまた、いい。ネコに出会えた瞬間の新鮮な喜び、何を考えているのか、狙っているのか、そぶりから想像する楽しみ、顔つきから想像する楽しみ、そういう思いの深さが伝わる文だ。

　僕の近所にもいろいろなネコがたくさんいる。みんな個性的で、何かを考えている。明日は早起きして彼らと「会話」してみようか。

日本各地の漁村などで、そこで生活する人と猫が、和やかに、穏やかに見事に共存している様を捉えた本です。カラー写真で紹介しながらも、通勤・通学に持ち運べる文庫本というのもうれしい限りです。
