自衛官と言っても、我々とそんなに変わらない、普通の感覚で、
気負いなく（といっても、内に秘めた熱さ、責任感にはひかれる）
仕事をしている姿に共感した。エールを送りたいと思った。
著者の「とことんまで知りたい」という取材の姿勢も素晴らしい。

緻密なルポルタージュを書いてきた著者が自衛隊を題材に描いた。
その成り立ちから様々な矛盾を抱え、一方でいまではＰＫＯ等の国際貢献にイの一番に借り出され、とはいえ国内ではいまだに（本書が執筆されたのは約１０年前だが）色眼鏡で見られる組織。
防衛大学の卒業ダンスパーティのエピソードに始まり、志願して過酷なレンジャー訓練に身を投じる自衛官を描く陸上自衛隊のパート、最新鋭の装備を搭載しているが、要員不足から相当の装備が十分使われないままになっているという実態と、陸上・航空以上に下士官・兵と士官階層が厳然と分けられた階級社会であること、鉄の棺おけと呼ぶ過酷な生活環境下にある海上自衛隊のパート。華やかな戦闘機パイロットとは異なり冬季は雪に覆われる僻地のレーダー基地を描く航空自衛隊。最後は再度陸上自衛隊に戻りカンボジアＰＫＯを担当した設備部隊が現地で体験した法制度と実運用との乖離の問題、また帰国後に発生していた問題を炙り出す。
自衛隊擁護でも反自衛隊でもなく、建前でもなく、大上段にふりかぶるのではなく、一部の特定の意見に拠ることもない足掛け３年に及んだという緻密な現場取材に基づく記事は圧倒的かつ説得力がある。偏向のない生の自衛隊を知る上で格好の良書。
余談だが海上自衛隊の護衛艦のエピソードで登場するベテラン下士官の人物像やエピソードはそのまま福井康晴の「亡国のイージス」の主人公の設定に用いられているようだ。

なかなか表に出てこない自衛隊の実際の訓練、特に特殊部隊について、その厳格さ、厳しさに衝撃を受けました。並はずれた厳しさとそれによって培われる精神が彼らの勲章であるようです。一般社会での経済活動とは無関係な世界で、ひたすら訓練を通し、自らとの戦いを続け祖国を守ろうとする志しに感銘を受けました。自衛隊とはどんなところか、と言うことが少し理解できました。
