明治以降、日本人は、脱亜入欧というスローガンを掲げてきたわけだが、その是非は置くとして、それを掲げる以上は、最低、「ギリシャ・ローマ」と「聖書」くらいは（入信しないまでも）理解しておくべきではなかったか・・・というのが、常々の私の考えであった。
ただ、聖書はともかく、ヨーロッパ文明の基礎となった「ギリシャ・ローマ文明」については、これを、きちんと、系統立てて、しかも、基礎知識がない日本人にもわかるように詳述した良書は皆無であったのである。
そこへ、この本が出た。
読んでみると、読みやすいし、わかりやすい。
日本人は、必ずしも、欧米に同化する必要はないが、この書は必読の書であると思われる。

5.0 out of 5 stars 内乱期ではあるが人材の宝庫を感じさせる, 2007/10/29
皇帝コモドゥスが暗殺された後、帝国は内乱へと突入していくが、それでもなをバラエティ豊かな人材による群雄割拠ぶりは読んでいてわくわくしてくる。
しかもエリートと軍人たたき上げが混ざり合っていることで、余計ローマ帝国の人材登用と実力主義によるチャンスがあった国かがわかって面白い。
結局皇帝となったセヴェルスが死に際に「私はすべてやってきた。ただそれもいまとなっては何の意味も無い」といったのが興味深い。早くも自分の作り上げた皇統の終焉を見ていたのかもしれない。
弟を殺し全ての肖像の顔を削り取らせた兄カラカラの怨念すら感じる。

ローマ帝国の歴史をひも解くことは、政治体制、法体系、公共投資のあり方等いろいろな面でアメリカを含む西欧社会の根底にあるものについての理解の手助けとなり、目から鱗です。通史を物語風に読み安くした上に、歴史学の通説をカバーし、さらに作者の解釈を加えられており、一般教養書としては出色でしょう。しかも文庫化で求めやすくなり、私自身も含めて、興味はあるがわざわざハードカバーの厚い単行本をを１４巻読む気にならない層にまで読者層を広げることができたと思います。惜しむらくは、塩野氏の文章の句読点の使い方に多少難点があって文章を読みにくくしている点、それから２００７年８月を最後に文庫続編が出版されていないことです。新潮社さん、残っている単行本３巻分早く文庫化してください。
