若き皇帝カリグラの死により、突然に皇帝へと押し上げられたクラウディウスだが、歴史家だった知識を生かし地味にも着実に成果をあげていく。
しかし、身体的にも恵まれず溌剌さも無かったクラウディウスは50歳になるまで他人から畏敬の念を持って接せられる重要性を理解できなかった。当たり前であるがその種の感覚は幼少のころから敬意を持って両親や友人に接せられていないと養えない感覚である。軽蔑に慣れた皇帝を誰も尊敬しないのは頷ける。
現在でも、自分の夫をコバカにしていながらそれを見せて育てた息子が嫁に馬鹿にされるのは当たり前なのだ。特に男の子は厳しくも敬意を払いながら育てるのがいかに大切か、夫を立てることがいかに大切かを痛烈に感じる一冊。クラウディウスとアグリッピーナが反面教師となって教えてくれる。

カエサル編とアウグストゥス編が終わってからすいすい進むローマ人の物語。
こういうのが読みたかった。一人についてあまりに長いと飽きるから。

この巻の主人公は４代皇帝クラウディウス。見た目もパットしない５０歳のおじさんがカリグラ暗殺でいきなり皇帝に担ぎ出されてしまった。
歴史の勉強をよくしていたクラウディウスはなかなかうまく治世を行っていくのだが・・・

　やりたいことをやると言ってもやりすぎだったカリグラが暗殺され、皇帝に担ぎ上げられたクラウディウス。背も低くどもる癖のあった第一人者は、それでも実に真面目に帝国を支えることになる。

　決して自分一人ですべてをやろうとしなかった彼は、個人的な使用人たちを秘書官グループとして活用する。当然、元老院としては面白くない。その上、やりたい放題な皇妃が加わる。ついには自分の奥さんに殺されるハメになる。

　帝位の正当性を血に求めるならば、皇帝の重要な仕事の一つは子作りという事になる。中国では後宮を作り、そのいわば皇帝の家庭内の使用人が宦官で、官僚グループたる豪族や外戚との権力争いに終始した事を思い出す。ここまでローマにはそれがほとんど見られなかったのが興味深い。もっとも皇帝が子作りに精を出せばメッサリーナのような女性が多く出る訳で……この先はちょっと控えておこうか。

　それにしても、「人間とは心底では欺されたいと望んでいる」という行には、多くの「ヤラレタ」と思わされたい男たちは手を打って喜んだのではないか。これぞ真骨頂とご多分に漏れず喜んだのだが、うれしいのだから仕方がない。素直に大喜びしておくとしよう。
