とても読み応えがあった。ハンニバルとスキピオ・アフリカヌスという、指折りの名将同士の対決や２人の人となりも知る事ができ、少しも退屈する事はなかった。しかし、僕がこの本を読んで一番印象に残った場面は、カルタゴ滅亡のシーンでのローマ軍の司令官スキピオ・エミリアヌスが滅び行くカルタゴを目にしながら友人で歴史家のポリビウスに言った次の言葉である。
　「ポリビウス、今われわれは、栄華を誇った帝国の滅亡という、偉大なる瞬間に立ち合っている。だが、この今、わたしの胸を占めているのは勝者の喜びではない。いつかはわがローマも、これと同じときをむかえるであろうという哀感なのだ」
この言葉には僕は涙が止まらなかった。当時のローマは高度成長期であり、誰もローマの滅亡など想像すらしていなかった時代に、彼はやがてくるであろう祖国の最期を予感していたのだろうと思う。事実、彼のこの言葉から約１５００年後、古代ローマは完全に滅亡した。

ローマ人の物語I~V、自己最高記録の速さで読破してしまった。
登場人物の背景、さまざまなエピソードなど詳細で且つわかりやすい表現。
まるで自分が共和制ローマ時代の人間にでもなったような気分だった。

ハンニバル戦記においては、戦場での布陣図が本文をさらにわかりやすくしてくれ、

その他にもそれそれの国の時代ごとの勢力図、戦場になった場所の地図も参考になる。
何より公平であろうとする姿勢が良い。

何度でも読み返したくなる本。続編の文庫化が非常に待ち遠しい。

　ハンニバルとスキピオという　二人の天才が　ポエニ戦役という舞台で最後にどのように振舞ったかを本巻は物語る。
　
　史実として言うなら　スキピオはハンニバルに完勝し　ハンニバルはスキピオに完敗した。勝者と敗者がいる風景だ。但し　この二人が　大きな歴史の流れの中に消えていく様も良く見えてくる。特に　勝者であったスキピオが　ローマ帝国の内部のパワーゲームの中で不遇に死んでいく場面は印象的だ。ハンニバルの方が　自分の資質に忠実に生き、そして没落していった様に　幾分かの爽快感を含ませた塩野にして　スキピオとの「距離感」が微妙にあると感じた。

　本巻で　最後にカルタゴとマケドニアがローマに滅ぼされていく様が語られる。それは　必ずしも「ローマの勝利」を意味しているのではないと　塩野は言っているような気がする。
　相手を滅亡させなくてはならないローマとは　それまでの「敵を見方として飲み込む」というローマの哲学の「破産」も意味しているかもしれないからだ。

　ローマとの「旅」は　まだこれからだ。
