超！痛快時代活劇です。
「プライドなんかじゃご飯は食べられないのよ~~！！」
とお考えの女性は読まないで下さい。（笑）
無能な藩主に仕えるくらいなら、志高い浪人の道を選んだ男の話です。
人生そのものに無頓着。
誰に認めてもらいたいわけでもなく、ただひたすら己の価値基準にのみ
忠実にいようとする、典型的『自己完結型人間』です。
腹が据わっているからやることが大胆。
男と生まれてきたからには・・・・と夢ふくらむ物語です

未完とわかっていながら、下巻が非常に楽しみである。
読み出して数十ページで今の自分が恥ずかしくなり、あとは夢中になって読み、考えた。
今を生きる者への挑戦状なのか。
自分なりの答えを探してみようと思う。

　隆慶一郎の代表作と言ったら文句なく「影武者徳川家康」だし、「花の慶次」として漫画化されて読まれた「一夢庵風流記」を推すひとも多いかもしれない。「家康」にせよ「一夢庵」にせよ、隆作品の魅力は、網野史学を下敷きに、権力に抗して自由を求める人々（「道々の者」）と時の権力者の争いを自由闊達に描くところにあるのだが、そういった作品群の中では、この「死ぬことと見つけたり」は少々異色である。なぜならば、主人公の斉藤杢之助も中野一馬も、「お主は恐ろしい男だ。王の命に反して王の命に帰ろうとする」（宮城谷昌光「楽毅」）という、隆作品には他にない特殊なキャラクターだからだ。そして、そのキャラクターに隠居＝体制側である鍋島直茂が理解を示している、というのも、体制に抗する主人公、という隆作品のパターンとは異なっており、興味深い。
　理屈をガタガタこねるよりも、あの「葉隠」から無類の面白さを引き出した作者の天才を素直に楽しむべきであろう。わたくしは隆作品の中ではこれを最も痛快な作品だと思っている。
　作者が「見知らぬ海へ」「花と火の帝」などと同様、これを未完で残したのは本当に残念というほかはない。もっと長生きして欲しかった。
