昭和49年刊行｢暗黒世界のオデッセイ｣からの抜粋にその他を加え編集したもの。文庫本発行は昭和57年。大まかな目次は｢二〇〇一年暗黒世界のオデッセイ｣｢レオナルド･ダ･ヴィンチの半狂乱の生涯｣｢星新一論｣｢筒井康隆全漫画｣｢乱調人間大研究｣。｢二〇〇一年暗黒世界のオデッセイ｣は2001年を予測して書いたエッセイ。正月の新聞にも未来予測的コメントなどが載るのだが、こういったのは頼まれると仕方がない仕事なのだろう。この本のおもしろい点は筒井による自己分析的言辞。｢鬱病にとりつかれて書けなくなった｣p70、春日丘高校時代女生徒からいじめられたことで｢現在のぼくの女性増悪、女性蔑視の傾向はその反動であろう｣p300と書いている。｢乱調人間大研究｣には癲癇についても詳しく書いてある。断筆前の筒井の意識を知る上で興味深く読む。漫画は絵が独特、構成などその他の技術はほどほど。解説は高平哲郎。
