七瀬三部作といわれるそうですが、その中でもやはり本作が最高の出来だと思います。
よくよく考えると、超能力者七瀬の視点を通して、人間に対してかなり厳しい見方をしているわけですが、それでも読む側に嫌悪感を与えることも無く「うんうん、そうだよな」と思わせます。途中からはSF作品であることも忘れて引き込まれます。それもたぶん、七瀬という絶妙なキャラの恩恵だと思うのですが、筒井康隆のすごさをまざまざと見せ付けられました。
ただ二作目「七瀬ふたたび」以降は普通のSFっぽくなりすぎてて、個人的にはガッカリしました。一作目の日常っぽい雰囲気のままで続編を書いてほしかったです。

七瀬３部作と称される、七瀬が主人公の第１作が本書です。
人の心が読めるテレパス七瀬が、家政婦として幾つかの家を渡り歩く中でのエピソードを短編形式で数編収録しています。

人の心を読んでしまえるが故に思い知らされる七瀬の、怒り、失望、葛藤、などの描写を通じて、人間の持つ天使の半面（悪い面）が、異様な心理的迫力を伴って描かれています。

プロットも手堅くまとまりがあり、娯楽的要素にも落ち度なく、筒井短編の中では出色の出来だと思います。

　美少女テレパス火田七瀬――彼女は生まれながらに目の前の人の心を読みとることができるのだ。世間の迫害を恐れた七瀬はテレパシー能力に勘づかれないよう、お手伝いさんとして様々な家庭を転々とする。一見ごく平凡で幸せそうに見える８つの家庭で七瀬が見たものは、小市民たちの欲望と狂気に満ちた猥雑な心理であった・・・・・・
　コミカルな筆致で人間の心の暗部を残酷に抉る、恐ろしくも哀しいオムニバス作品である。テレパス七瀬初登場の作品で、他にも七瀬シリーズは『七瀬ふたたび』『エディプスの恋人』があるが、この続篇２つは駄作だと思う。ただ『家族八景』は素晴らしい作品なので、ぜひ読んでいただきたい。直木賞候補作にも上った。
