5.0 out of 5 stars 日本を代表する長編小説の一つで、言うまでもなく傑作です！！, 2004/5/20
　この小説は、４５歳の大学の事務職員の平凡な日常風景から始まります。どこから見ても、何の変哲もない中年男ですが、実は、かつて「徴兵忌避者」として、５年間日本中を逃げ回った過去を持つ人物だったのです。

　小説は、徴兵忌避者として孤独で不安な逃亡の日々を送る青年の姿と、２０年後の中年の日々とを交互に描いていきます。二つの時間のコントラストが鮮やかであればあるほど、過去の日々が鮮烈に浮かび上がるという手法です。

　この手法は、うまくいっています。他にも、新聞記事の文体や、酔っぱらいのモノローグ（丸谷の独擅場！）など、文体の見本帳ともなっています。
　ジョイスを読んだことのある人なら分かると思いますが、眠くなった人の独白は、平仮名が多くなっていき、句読点も少なくなっていきます。そのへんの文章効果をじっくり楽しんでください。

　なお、この作品で最も見事なのは、最後の数頁です。倒叙法の記述により、哀切で叙情的な文章が、かつて例がないほど複雑な味わいを生む効果を出しています。
　やはり、これは傑作です。

読みながら、腑に落ちない点がずっとあります。それが作者の力量のせいなのか、そういう設定なのか、悩ましく思いながら読み進み、最後にははっきりします。主人公には、重要な過去があり、その過去が現在と交叉しながら物語は進むのですが、主人公に影を落としているのはその重要な過去であるかのように思えるし、主人公もそう思っているのですが、その過去とは少しずれたことに大きな落とし穴があることが最後に分かります。

傑作です。ですが、好きになれないので、星4つです。

　まず、第二次大戦中に、徴兵拒否が、この日本で現実にあったらしい事を初めてしり驚いた。そして、その徴兵忌避をした男性の平凡な日常が、20年もたって、徴兵忌避という過去の事実からじりじりと壊れていく、という話である。
　なにか一つの事から逃げた時、どこまでもその事に追いかけられる、それには、正面から立ち向かわないといけないというメッセージなのだろうか。たとえ、その事が絶対悪である戦争であっても、逃げた事は、その代償をはらい続けないといけないのだろうか？立ち向かわなかったものは、一生、笹枕なのだろうか？
　文体の面白さを味わいつつ、メッセージをよみとりぞーっとした。
