伊丹 十三
1933(昭和8)年映画監督伊丹万作の長男として京都に生まれる。映画俳優、デザイナー、エッセイスト、後に映画監督。TV番組、TVCMの名作にも数多く関わり、精神分析がテーマの雑誌「モノンクル」の編集長も務めた。翻訳者としての仕事もあり、料理の腕も一級だった。映画「お葬式」発表以降は映画監督が本業に。数々のヒット作を送り出した後、’97(平成9)年12月没(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

「ヨーロッパ退屈日記」よりは、若干勢いがないと感じる人も多いはず。でも、独特の価値観を押し付けでなくさらりと断定して憚らない切れのよさは健在です。題名を気にせず、（といっても気になる人はいないか）誰でも楽しめます。料理と、服装についての美的感覚は、やはり見習うべきでしょうか。ホンモノとは、何かを学ぶ上でも読んだほうが良い本の一冊です。

似非欧米文化の氾濫する我が国に対し、本物を愛する姿勢を示す本です。
直接には、ファッションや料理など表層的な文化を扱っているにすぎませんが、そのような次元を突き抜けて、我が国の文化全体に通ずる批評が展開されています。
つまり、我々は西洋文化を表面的には受容したけれど、その本質は何ら獲得していないのではないか、我々は猿真似をしているにすぎないのではないか、と。

とはいっても、このように深刻ぶって、重々しく語ることは、この本に全く相応しくないでしょう。
ここから学ぶべきは、眉間にしわを寄せることなく、むしろにやにや笑いながら、軽やかに批判していく精神なのですから。

　彼が、この作品を書いた時に、この作品を評価したのは、「山口瞳」先生くらいしかなかったのではないかという印象を持つ（本当は違いかもしれないが）。
　その後の彼の活躍と悲劇的な死はどうにも納得いかないけれども、この本に書かれている「男の美学」からは分からないわけではない。

　この本が出たときの筆者の評価は、ほとんどなかったと思うが、その後の映画監督としての生き様の原典として、理解できると思う。

　この本のおかげで、「左ハンドル」の車に乗るのは、みっともないことだと思うようになった。
