　時代は大正時代の北海道。厳しい自然の中で生きる農村が舞台となっている。物語は拓一と耕作の兄弟が、苦しい生活の中でも前向きに生き、成長していく様子が描かれている。幼い日の父の死、母との別れという厳しい現実の中、兄弟は祖父母のもとで自然と正面から向き合う生活を通して、家族の絆や友情といった人間にとって大切なことを学びとって行く。

　登場する人物達は皆、それぞれに悩みや苦しみを持ちつつも生き生きとしている。北海道の雄大な自然と、戦争や貧困という厳しい時代を背景に、寄り添い助け合いながら生きる農村の人々が見事に描写されている。尊敬する先生との出会い、甘酸っぱい初恋、姉の結婚、母と祖母の病気、やがて兄弟は少年から青年へと成長する。

　しかし、人々の様々な思いは、自然の気まぐれの前に無残にも一瞬にして押し流されてしまう。数十年を経て築き上げたものをすべて失ってもなお、自然と共に人間として自らの信じる道を歩もうとする兄弟の姿は、読み手の心を熱くする。続編を読まずにはいられない作品である。

今までこんなに泣けた本はありません。
それも、感動というよりは、あまりにも悲しくて泣けてしまうのです。
なんでどうして人生ってこんなに理不尽なのだろう、と悔しくなって
しまうくらいに。この本の登場人物たちほどドラマチックな体験は
していなくても、努力が報われなかったり、身に覚えのない災難に
遭ったりすることは誰にもあることだと思います。私はクリスチャン
ではないので「神さまから与えられた試練」とは、どうも考えられない
のですが、人間は実に「受け身」なものだなと感じてしまいました。
生まれた家も、持って生まれた才能も容姿も、育つ環境にしても
すべて「与えられて」いるなと。そして生死にしても、当たり前だけれど
人間は何も自由にできないなと。自分自身も含め、現代人は人間の
力を過信しすぎているように思います。

『泥流地帯』は、私の一生を左右した本と言っても過言ではありません。

　北海道の日進部落で育った拓一は、貧困や親の不在にも健気な姿勢で向かい、明るく誠実に生きていきます。その拓一や、拓一を取り囲む人々の半生が三浦綾子さん独特の文体で描かれていますが、ここに描かれていることは現在の世の中にも十分に適用されます。「人間ってなんだろう」「どう生きるべきなんだろう」「正しさってどういうことだろう」と、基本的でありながら重要なことを様々に考えさせられます。
