　群ようこ作品の多くは、テーマを「日常」としている。実際、それが彼女の強みであることが多い。『無印』シリーズのような小説・短篇においては、彼女の「日常」を通じて培われた観察眼がいかんなく発揮される。

　しかし、次々に発売される彼女の「エッセイ集」を読むと、私はいつも「エッセイってなんだろう」という疑問にとらわれてしまう。ことに群氏やその他数人の作家によるエッセイは、「スーパー・エッセイ」と称されている。しかし「スーパー」エッセイとは、ただのエッセイよりもいいものなのか悪いものなのか。

　この本はそういった「エッセイ集」の最たるものである。友達がこんなことを言った、母親があんなヘンなことをやらかした、そんなあれこれを綴って１冊にまとめてあるわけだが、読んでいて驚くほど退屈だ。こんなものを読むくらいなら、自分が友人としゃべっていた方が楽しいと思えるほどである。

　群氏は普段から「半径500ｍ範囲内のことしか興味がない」とか、ご自分の作品は「退屈しのぎに読んでもらえたら」とかいったようなことをよく書いておられる。ということは、このような「スーパー・エッセイ」も、いわば確信犯的に書いておられるのだろう。そんな本が需要のあることも確かだし、「お文学」ばかりが本ではないとも思う。しかし曲がりなりにもお金を出して本を買うとき、私はそれに「エンターテイメントとしての質」を求める。そして本書のそれは、非常に低かったと言わざるを得ない。

著者の日常生活がたんたんと書かれているが、それが本当に面白い。著者が特別変わった性格とか、性癖がある、というわけでないのだが、一つ一つが何故か笑えるのである。物事をこのような見方から捉えられるのは、本当に才能だ。最後まで痛快なエッセイだった。
