著者は「鬼平犯科帳」に代表される小説家としてももちろん有名ですが、また、名エッセイストとしても有名です。その数多いエッセイ集の中でも、ファンの間で必ず上位にランクされるのが本作品です。

この作品の特徴は、タイトルにもある通り、食べ物のことを中心にしていながら、同時に自伝であり、人生論でもあるということです。即ちこのエッセイ集の特徴は、「鬼平犯科帳」同様、簡潔で香気高い文章の中に「人生そのもの」が描かれているということです。このエッセイ集を読めば、どうして著者に「鬼兵犯科帳」という名作が描けたのか、その理由がわかると思います。
年齢を重ね、読み返すたびに何か新しいことを発見できる滋味あふれる稀代の名エッセイです。池波ファンはもちろん、読書子には是非読んで欲しい一冊です。ちなみに、表紙及び本文中の描画も著者の手になるものです。

池波正太郎はご存知のように鬼平犯科帳などで有名だがファンの間では食通としても知られている。その池波氏の食に関する代表作といえるのがこの「食卓の情景」である。池波氏が少年時代よく食べていたものや、思い入れの深い「食」について記されており、昔なつかしい味が沢山出てくる。料理が目の前に浮かぶようでこの本を読むとお腹がいっぱいになってくる。

酒の細道という漫画で紹介されていた本です。
短編は話なので電車などで少し読むのによいです。
こういう本を読むと昔の食卓の方がずっと豊かだったのだなと
思います
