西村 淳
1952(昭和27)年、北海道・留萌生れ。網走南ヶ丘高校卒業後、舞鶴海上保安学校へ。巡視船勤務の海上保安官となる。第30次南極観測隊、第38次南極観測隊ドーム基地越冬隊に参加。巡視線“みうら”の教官兼主任主計士として海猿のタマゴたちを教えた後、2009(平成21)年に退職。現在は講演会、料理講習会、TV/ラジオなどで活躍中(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

「面白南極料理人」「面白南極料理人　笑う食卓」に続いて西村さんのこの本を読んだ。「名人誕生」というタイトルが示す通り、初めて南極観測隊に選ばれて第３０次隊に参加することが決まる過程、日本での訓練、しらせでの航海生活、そして昭和基地での生活の始まりから夏隊との別れまでをとりあげている。リング３部作にたとえていうなら、リング０のように時間を巻き戻して「名人誕生」に至るまでの面白エピソードが語られる訳だ。

西村氏の南極観測隊参加史としては時系列的にいえば一番先に来るべき作品といえるが、いい意味でアバウトな著者であるから、観測隊用語で既刊の２冊に登場するものは詳しく説明されていなかったりすることもある。レシピの紹介はごくわずか（それも「笑う食卓」掲載のものと重複）。出来事を時間順に追っていく点では第１作と共通する。前２作と重なるエピソードはほとんどないから、それらを楽しめた人は本作も楽しめると思う。私は、日本の公務員のお役所仕事への反撃が特に興味深かった。

それと第３０次隊・昭和基地限定の「ほぼ毎日南極新聞」である「ＡＮＴＡＲＣＴＩＣＡ３０」の一部をそのままのせており、リアルさ満点。この続きは絶対に読みたい。本格的な第３０次隊としての越冬生活はto be continuedのようだが、続編が出るんでしょうね？

なお、著者の文体も確立されてきたようだが、椎名誠氏と似たものを感じるのは気のせいか？ 最後に、解説執筆者は映画「南極料理人」を監督した沖田修一氏である。
