著者略歴 (「BOOK著者紹介情報」より)

西村 淳
1952(昭和27)年、北海道留萌市生れ。網走南ヶ丘高校卒業後、舞鶴海上保安学校へ。巡視船勤務の海上保安官となる。第30次南極観測隊、第38次南極観測隊ドーム基地越冬隊に参加。陸にいる時は、講演会、料理講習会、TV/ラジオ出演などで忙しい。2006(平成18)年4月から巡視船みうらの教官兼主任主計士として、海猿のタマゴたちに囲まれている(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

　「面白南極料理人」の続編かと思いきやちょっと違う。あいかわらず、ノリとインスピレーションで足りないものを補い、大食いのおじさん達にご飯を作りつつ、呑みかつ食らう（？！）宴会大好きおじさんの飲ん兵衛な日々のお話ですが。（笑）
　一章ごとに、著者が参加した二回の南極調査隊の思い出のエピソード＆それにまつわるレシピが掲載されているのは、「面白南極料理人」よりは料理本っぽいですね。前著には詳細なレシピが載っていないので、料理名からどんなものを食べているのか妄想できても、想像は出来ませんでしたから。伊勢エビの団子など材料的に忠実に真似するつもりの無いレシピもあるので、読んですぐ作りたいタイプの料理本ではありませんが、やはりお料理って困った時には無いものを捏造するインプロバイゼーション的な機転も必要なのね、と思いました。

　ただ本全体の構成は、「面白南極料理人」のほうが起承転結がしっかりしています。時系列的に分かりやすいというべきかな。前著では書かれなかった第３０次隊と前著で書き損ねた（らしい）３８次隊のエピソードが入り乱れていて、最初の章が３０次隊だったから次の章も同じ頃のお話なのね、なんて気楽に構えていると肩透かし食います。章ごとのタイトルからもどの次隊のどの時期の話なのか類推しにくいのも難点ではないでしょうか？

　全体的な読み物としては、前著に劣るので、星３つ。構成については、編集側にも落ち度があると思います。

前作、面白南極料理人と同じテイストの本。
前作を楽しめた人ならこの本も楽しく読めるでしょう。
ただ、前作が著者の2回目の越冬経験を到着から期間まで時系列を追っていたのに対して、こちらは1回目と2回目の越冬経験がごちゃ混ぜになっているので、統一感は余りありません。
完成度がどうとか評論すれば、低い評価になるのかもしれませんが、面白く読めればそれで良いと割り切って読んでください。

買ってしまいました。
何かとくらい話題が満載のご時世、明るく乗り切る人の話は
ありがたい清涼飲料水です。明るいです、この方は間違いなく。
いや〜、レシピで参考にしたいのはある程度限定されますが
（だって一人分だけ作るには向いていないし〜）
逆転の発想というか、調理における発想の転換は参考になります。
この本によると」鮭の鮮度の見分け方を北海道民は肌で知っている
らしいです。あと、なまこに対する考え方に目から鱗。
自分の知らない世界を教えてもらう機会があるって、とても大事です。
