　司馬遼太郎の作品を読んだ中で、この作品は現時点で一番自分の考えに影響を及ぼしたものです。越後長岡七万四千石という小藩の家老河井継之助が官軍にも幕府にも属さず独立の姿勢で戊辰戦争を戦うという内容である。継之助の「行動を伴わない知識は必要がない」という言葉は非常に面白い。現在あふれかえっている情報に翻弄されている私共はなんなのか、と思わざるを得ない。自分が何をしたいのかを明確にしない限り、全ての知識は無になってしまう。そんな思いをさせられた一冊であった。男性は必読。

「河合継之助のような人間を持ったことははたして藩にとって幸か不幸か・・・」
作中、登場人物達により幾度か繰り返される問いである。
継之助はその卓越した頭脳と行動力により日本随一の砲兵団を作り上げ、それにより長岡藩という小藩をして一個の独立国にすることを夢見た。
しかし結果として、継之助ひきいる長岡藩は維新史上最も激烈な戦いとなる北越戦争へと突入してゆくことになる。

司馬さんは短編『英雄児』において、継之助の英雄ぶりとともに、このような英雄を持った小藩の不幸を描いた。
そして３年後、同じ河合継之助を主人公にし、全く別の視点、「武士」というものに焦点をあてた長編を発表した。
それがこの『峠』である。
継之助は福沢諭吉に劣らない開明論者で封建制の崩壊を誰よりも見通していながら、諭吉とはまったく違う道を選ぶ（この２人の掛け合いは私の最も好きなシーンである）。
自分自身の原理原則――「志」に従った結果である。
日本の文明化が諭吉の志なら、継之助の志は「長岡藩士として藩をいかによくしてゆくか」ということだった。
司馬さんはあとがきでいう。
「幕末期に完成した武士という人間像は、日本人がうみだした、多少奇形であるにしてもその結晶のみごとさにおいて人間の芸術品とまでいえるように思える」

この究極的な武士の美を描いた『峠』に、私は司馬作品の典型を感じる。
その人間の行いが歴史的にどういう意味を持ったか、未来にどのように貢献したかは、決して司馬作品の主題ではない。
司馬さんが描くもの、それは人生の美である。
ただ生き伸びるだけの人生ではなく、「志」ある人生が放つ美である。
継之助が極端なほどに貫いたものである。

とにかく、★★★★★！！文句なしです。
絶対おススメ

他の登場人物も魅力あるけれど、それよりも何よりも「河井継之助」にあっぱれ！です。
「爽快」という言葉が一番当てはまるか・・・
読み進むにつれて、だんだん面白くなっていきます。

ある著名な人が「河井には長岡藩は小さいかもしれない」と言っていましたが、
私も、その気になれば一国の首相を努められる人物だと思いました。

歴史に「もし・・・」はありませんが、
河井継之助が長岡藩士でなければ・・・とか、色々な妄想がよぎっていきました。
個人的には、西郷隆盛や大久保利通、勝海舟と同じレベル、もしくはそれ以上の人物だと思います。

あんまり書いていると、内容を全部書いてしまいそうなので、
ここらへんで失礼します。
でも、「傑作」間違いなし！です。
ぜひお勧めしたい本です。
