周防の村医から一転して討幕軍の総司令官となり、維新の渦中で非業の死をとげたわが国近代兵制の創始者大村益次郎の波瀾の生涯を描く長編。動乱への胎動をはじめた時世をよそに、緒方洪庵の適塾で蘭学の修養を積んでいた村田蔵六(のちの大村益次郎)は、時代の求めるままに蘭学の才能を買われ、宇和島藩から幕府、そして郷里の長州藩へととりたてられ、歴史の激流にのめりこんでゆく。

司馬 遼太郎
1923‐1996。大阪市生れ。大阪外語学校蒙古語科卒。産経新聞文化部に勤めていた’60(昭和35)年、『梟の城』で直木賞受賞。以後、歴史小説を一新する話題作を続々と発表。’66年に『竜馬がゆく』『国盗り物語』で菊池寛賞を受賞したのを始め、数々の賞を受賞。’93年には文化勲章を受章。“司馬史観”とよばれる自在で明晰な歴史の見方が絶大な信頼をあつめるなか、’71年開始の『街道をゆく』などの連載半ばにして急逝。享年72(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

と、著者も書いていましたが、明治維新のころの人物にしては華やかなエピソードがなにもない、とにかく、勉強･研究の人。
昔の日本にたくさんいた、技術者肌の人でしょうか。
本人は自分のことをどう思っていたのか。
とにかく時代は彼を必要とした。そして、彼はそれに十二分に応えた。
その見事さに圧倒されます。

物語は村田蔵六（のちの大村益次郎）が、長州の片田舎で町医者をする百姓の子として生まれ、大坂の緒方洪庵塾にて医学とオランダ語を学び、その知識を買われ宇和島藩上士、幕府教授、そして故郷の長州藩にて軍事総司令官となり、戊辰戦争の終息とともに非業の死をとげるまでを描いています。

大村益次郎というと華やかな人物の多い幕末の中では地味なタイプの主人公なので、読もうかどうか迷っている方もいるかもしれませんが、司馬さんは彼を非常に合理的で無骨だが妙な面白みも感じさせる人物としてとても魅力的に描いています。
人が「お暑うございます」と挨拶すると「夏は暑いのがあたりまえです」と顔色を変えず返すような人物。
司馬さんはこういうタイプの人物を描かせると本当にうまい。
また、桂小五郎や高杉晋作も登場しますし、吉田松陰や久坂玄瑞などについても触れられているので、彼らのファンの方も十分に楽しめると思います。ぜひ『世に棲む日日』とあわせてどうぞ。

『花神』という題名は、魅力的な題名の多い司馬作品の中でも絶品だと思います。その意味はラスト数ページでさり気なく語られるのみですが、今まで読んできた長い物語が一気に蘇ってきてそして終息したような、なんとも爽やかでそして切ない気分にさせられて、ふと読む手を止めてしまいました。
そしてその最終章につけられたタイトルは「蒼天」。『花神』を含めた司馬作品全体に流れるこの澄んだ青空のイメージこそ、私が司馬作品に惹かれてやまない理由です。

日本陸軍の祖、大村益次郎の半生を描いた作品です。これは1969年から連載されたものですが、同時期には河井継之助の「峠」、吉田松陰と高杉晋作の「世に棲む日々」などを執筆されています。これから3年後には「翔ぶが如く」の連載が始まっていますから、維新前の騒乱から生まれた近代日本の軍隊誕生の物語です。
大村益次郎と言うのは、一般的にはマイナーな人物ですし、地味で主人公にするには面白み欠けるような気がするのですが、これをシーボルトの娘を交えると、その存在に躍動を感じます。1963年頃、司馬さんは「鬼謀の人」で、一度大村益次郎を書いていますから、きっと日本が近代化される過程での軍隊の必要性を意識されていたんでしょうね。
