　司馬さんのデビュー作といってもおかしくない、1958年から執筆された作品です。連載された当時は、「梟のいる都城」でしたが、改題されました。
　「重蔵が考える秀吉は、ふしぎな運の恵まれ方をした」という言葉の中に、卑賤に生まれながらに天下人に成り上がった秀吉に対する、尊敬とも不思議さをも含んだ気持ちが察せられます。秀吉の命を狙い、後世の石川五右衛門伝説を滲ませる、面白い物語です。

昭和33年4月から34年2月まで地方紙に連載された初の長編小説である。司馬は当時34〜35才。直木賞を受賞した出世作だ。

司馬はもともと、本作で石川五右衛門を書くつもりであったという。五右衛門は当時の公的文書に処刑記録が残っている実在の人物だが、来歴はよくわからない。処刑記録が残るほどの大盗賊でありながら、実際にどんな悪さを働いたのか全く記録がない。五右衛門とはいったい誰だったのか。そのあたりから着想を膨らませていったようだ。

本作の主人公は、伊賀忍者の葛篭重蔵と風間五平である。彼らが実在の人物かどうかはっきりしないが、司馬によれば三重県伊賀市の敢国神社の伝承にその名があるそうだ。幼馴染の二人が男子の生き方を賭けて戦う冒険活劇の面白さに歴史の謎解きの面白さが加わって、本作の厚みを増している。

司馬の本作がきっかけとなって忍者小説ブームが起こったという説と、既に流行の兆しにあった忍者ブームに司馬がうまく乗った流行作品であるという説がある。忍者ものとしては、このあと３、４年に渡って「飛び加藤」や「下請忍者」など数本の短編と、長編「風神の門」を上梓した。一時は「忍豪作家」と呼ばれて閉口したと司馬自身が語っていたが、司馬の作品中、忍者ものはむしろ少数である。

流行を作ったのか、流行に乗ったのか、いずれにせよ、司馬の描く忍者は単なる勧善懲悪や冒険活劇のヒーローではない。戦国という時代において歴史的意味をもった存在として描かれている。すなわち、武士のように「土地」と引き換えに主人に忠義を尽くす封建的存在ではなく、自己の技術を「銭」で売る新時代の商品経済的存在である。

時は高度成長前夜、サラリーマンが社会の主軸となっていく時代に、忍者という戦国の「サラリーマン」をうまく重ねた。直木賞受賞作らしい上質な大衆娯楽作品であるだけでなく、司馬史観の萌芽も見られて興味深い一作である。

映画「梟の城」を見た後に読みました。映画よりもずっと楽しめる作品。映画で割愛されている歴史的背景や忍者社会の構図が豊富に説明されていて、個々の忍者の心情や苦悩、葛藤がとてもよく描かれている。司馬作品には他にも忍者モノがありますが、この本が一番楽しめた。巧みな筆さばきで、内容豊富でありながら、一気に読みきりました。
