平塚の魅力的なところは、犯罪者を傷ついた一人の人間として見ようと努めているところだ。顕著なのは、彼を名刑事たらしめた「吉展ちゃん事件」のケース。死刑になった犯人の小原保は、足を不自由だった。そして彼は、死刑執行前に平塚に感謝の意を伝えている。私は、あえてこの章をお終いに読んだのだけれども、平塚が小原保の墓を訪れるところで涙してしまった。ここだけで終わる本なら星5つでもよかったと思う。

ただし、真相が明らかになりつつある「下山事件」（平塚は自殺説）や「三億円事件」（平塚は単独犯説）に関しては、名刑事の誇りと直観が災いして事件の真相究明をさまたげた印象を受けた。

さらにいえば、身に覚えのない罪を「白状しろ」と警察に迫られた経験のある身としては、「帝銀事件」を「平沢しかありえない」とするある種の割り切り方には、恐怖を覚える。刑事にとっては、自白してくれた被疑者ほど可愛いものはないのだ。平塚のコメントを読んでいると、平沢の日本画の巨匠としての肩書きが気に入らなかったのではないかと思えなくもない。

こうした弱点は、著者からの明確なコメントがあれば、かなり補えたはずで平塚のコメントをただ取捨選択しただけという内容は、資料としては、興味深いが読後感は、釈然としないものが残る。

帝銀事件から3億円事件まで、いくつもの事件にかかわった刑事の側から見た犯人の見つけ方、アリバイの崩し方がよく分かる。下山事件などは他殺説の見地から書かれたものが多いが、平塚刑事の視線からは自殺説以外は考えられない。
また三億円事件では、犯人のとった行動などがよく分析されていて、当時の新聞でもここまで検証したものはなかっただろうと思う。またあのモンタージュ写真があまり信用できるものではなく、それが捜査や民間からの情報提供に支障を来たしたとは目から鱗の話でした。
30年前に刊行した本の再文庫化ということだが、昭和史の貴重な証言として☆5つ。

この本で扱われている事件、そのものが昭和事件史といっても決して過言ではない。平塚八兵衛の言葉で語られる様々な事件は内部にいたものだからこそ知ることもあり興味深い。ただ「（犯人は）こいつだ」と目を付けてからの執念深い捜査は、現在なら「人権侵害」という声が上がりそうだ。ただ平塚八兵衛はこういうだろう「コロシをした奴に人権なんてねぇ！」と。そういう捜査だからこそ冤罪も発生していたのではないかとさえ感じる。加えて著者はテープ起こしだけをするのではなく、独自の視点も書き加えるべきだったのではないかと思うと、素材がいいだけに口惜しい気がしてならない。
