日本の作家で最もセンセーショナルな作家をひとり選べ、と言われたなら、真っ先に挙げたいのは深沢七郎です。ケッタイナ個性の持ち主であるとか、奇抜な生活スタイルをして目立った作家は幾人も居るでしょうが、作品自体が、度肝を抜く凄さをもっているという点で、他に私は知りません。すべての作家のすべての作品を精読したわけではもちろんありませんが、直観的にそう思います。天皇の首が切り落とされる作品を書いて、その作品を好意的に評価した三島由紀夫と共に右翼に追われるハメになった人物です。深沢七郎はタダモノではありません。

初めて読んだ時あまりの感動に涙しました。村を規制している「姥捨て」の掟（制度）、それを承認せざるをえない村の経済事情、その掟（制度）を村の経済事情ゆえのカラクリとみる人々・・そんな中で、年齢不相応に歯があることを嘆き、純粋な信仰心から、快く、掟（制度）を受け入れ、お山に向かう母親、母親の願いで、母を負い姥捨てに向かう倅、神仏の加護のしるしである雪の降る中、掟に反して、声を上げて母親にそのことを告げる倅、それを押し止める母親・・・制度、経済、社会、親子・・・世のカラクリが短篇の中に凝縮されています。

一読して、言葉を失うような作品でなければ名作とは言えない、と私は思いますが、まさにそのような意味において名作だと思います。しかも「凄い」と頭に付けたい名作だと思います。どうぞご一読くださいませ。

わずか６０ページの物語なのに、物凄く深い余韻が胸に残る。本当に読んでよかった。この小説のテーマを「姥捨て」と整理するのはあまりに単純。いろいろな読み方がある。死に臨む姿勢、老母と息子の愛情、村の風習、家族とは、隣人とはなどなど。ページをめくるごとに物語の襞に分け入る。描写がとても丁寧。これが日本の山村の原風景、食料に餓えた時代の暮らしなのかとも思った。

楢山節考ほか数編が一冊になっているが、やはり白眉は楢山節考である。
小説の域を越えて伝えるべき名作の一つだと思いますので、是非読んでいただきたい。この本で何か感じるものがあれば、推薦者として幸いです。
