―――本書より、“座敷わらし”・ペドロのセリフ

北東北の、温泉のある山間の小さな村を舞台に、タンカーに乗っていた父の事故死を機に都会からその村へ越して来た少年・ユタ（本名＝水島勇太）が、害のない妖怪として知られる“座敷わらし”のペドロたちと出会い、彼らとの交流を通して“貧弱な坊や”状態（ブルワーカーの広告か！）から、心身ともに成長してゆく様子が描かれている。「ぼく」の一人称で語られる児童文学―1971（昭和46）年、新潮少年文庫の一冊として刊行―ではあるが、エッセイなどでもおなじみだった作者ならではのおっとりとした語り口のせいか、ユタのモノローグが作者本人の言葉であるように思われる部分などもあり、それがこの作品に、ちょっと奇妙というか、よくいえばユニークな味わいを与えているのだが。ともあれ、ユタに語りかけるペドロのセリフなどには、（読者として想定した）子どもたちに対する「君たちの中には、もっともっと可能性が眠っているはずだ」、というような、時代を超えて胸に響いてくる作者の想いが強く感じられ、もういい年をしたオレ自身も、読んでいて大いに励まされる思いがしたのだった。なお、74年にはNHKでドラマ化（近年DVD化も）。極力、この原作の世界を尊重して映像化した佳作（ただし、終盤の展開は大きく異なる）。

　父を事故で亡くした勇太が東北の湯ノ花村に母と二人で越してきます。けれど、分教場では、東京のモヤシッ子・ユタとよばれて、仲間にいれてもらえません。ひとりぼっちの勇太の前に、座敷わらしのペドロたちがあらわれます・・・。

　ひ弱な少年がたくましく育つ成長物語と言ってしまえばそれだけなのですが、読み返すたびに、ユタとペドロたちの物語は、面白く胸があつくなり、最後のところでは、涙ぐんでしまいます。

　座敷わらしのペドロたちは、昔、凶作で飢饉の年に間引きされて殺された子どもたちであるという話が、ユーモアとペーソスにあふれたペドロたち座敷わらしを形作り、この話を、たんなる愉快な成長物語にとどめず、いつまでも心に響き、忘れられない物語にしていると思います。

面白かったです。
妖怪に会えるお話です。
日本昔話を彷彿させるような懐かしい感じがしました。
間引きなどの歴史的なことは悲しく暗くなりがちですが、
そこは三浦先生の腕の見せ所、
テンポ良く進む話の中に何気なく組み込まれていて、
人生のいつの時代に読んでもすっと心に沁み込む一話だと思います。

最後の場面、ユタと座敷童たちのお別れは、ちょっと淋しくなりました…。

いじめられっこ。おとなしい子。自信をなくした人。一歩踏み出す勇気をもらいたい人。読んでみてください。
