伊達騒動という史実を元に「一人で生きていく」困難さを見事に表現した傑作である。
これでもかこれでもかと出てくる難題に、まさに命がけであたっていくさまは、読者の胸を打たずにおかない。


今の若い人たちが、原田甲斐の死に様（生き方）が理解できるだろうか。
私はこの本をハードボイルドとして読んだが、「ハードボイルド」といってしまうとなんだか「形だけの軽いもの」という印象を受ける方も多いことであろう。しかし、この本は「真のハードボイルド」である。

隆氏の「死ぬことと見つけたり」同様働き始めた若い世代にぜひとも読んでほしい一冊である。

山本周五郎は大ファンですが、これは文句なしに良い！伊達騒動の悪者となってしまっている原田甲斐の生き様。偽悪者の生き方に涙なしでは読めませんよ。
　これが本当かどうかは誰にも分かりません。だから、本当に彼は山本周五郎の書いたような人間だったのかも知れないし、本当に悪者だったのかもしれません。
　でもそんな事よりも、この本は読むべきですよ。僕は十代でこの本が読めてよかったと思っていますから。

上巻では、何人もの取り巻きをもち、自分の道場まで持っていた柿崎六郎兵衛。これが下巻では、乞食まで堕落する。この格差。おごれる平家は久しからずということばを想起させる。その決定的な原因はかつての自分の部下、石川兵庫介に両目を失明させられたこと。しかし、それは、柿崎がかつて稽古をつけると称して石川の腕を折ったことにある。この恨み晴らさぬでおくべきかと怨念が石川を修行にかりたて、最終的に親分、柿崎の両目をくりぬくことで目標を達成する。一人の中間管理職として、心にしみる。とくいたんぜん、しついたいぜん。
