文芸評論家の奥野健男さんが、「若い頃、太宰治の文学に感動した人は、必ず中年になり山本周五郎の文学に感銘する。二人は単に物語が面白い文学者ではなく、自分の人生に深くかかわる、自分の人生を決定する力を持っている文学者である。」と書いていた。私も４０歳。原田甲斐の自分の宿命に対する静かな諦観がこの小説の魅力。自分の行動が理解されなくてもかまわない。期待してはいけない。ただ、仙台６２万石の存続のために自暴自棄に陥ることなく自分の生涯をささげる。このような生き方は苦しい。原田甲斐の子どもたちは切腹になった。それも原田甲斐の真の意図を理解せずにだ。こんなむなしい人生あるだろうか。お家取り潰しの萌芽が出たら、それを火消しすることに人生を尽くす。でも人々は理解してくれない。愚直な生き方。そしてさあ、あなたはどう生きると突きつける。長編だが、一気に読んでしまった。

時代小説といえば、司馬遼太郎のしか読んだことがなかった。随筆のような筆致で行間にたっぷり芳香を含んだような司馬遼の文章も大好きだが、山本周五郎の骨太の筆致というかがっしりした構成も魅力的。登場人物がみんな印象的な役割を演じつつクライマックスに収斂していくところなんて完全に徹夜覚悟。伊達六十万石を割ろうと次々に仕掛けられる策謀に立ちはだかる原田甲斐。たぶん史書には「伊達兵部と伊達安芸の政争」としか記されない事件を、裏返し、つむぎ直して重厚かつ壮大な物語を作り上げている。お腹にたまる小説です。

ずっと読みたいと思っていたのだが、今回文庫の字が大きくなったのを機に
手をつけてみた。登場人物の多さは気になるところではあるが、人物が出てくるたびに書き出しておけば（翻訳ものによくあるように）理解が深まる。
私は稲見一良のように、この小説をハードボイルドとして味わっている。
まだまだ著についたばかりだが、かなり深いものがある。
今後の展開が非常に楽しみである。
