私、この様な作品に出会うために時代小説を読んでおります。
仁、義、勇。男の生きざまを描いた作品は数々ありますが、読み終えた後に爽快感を残す作品はそうそうあるものじゃございません。
人情物で有名な周五郎ですが、こちらの分野も実にうまい。さすがは周五郎。

「上杉鷹山」「竜馬がゆく」「死ぬことと見つけたり」「壬生義士伝」「武王の門」などを読んで感動した覚えのあるあなた。
ぜひ一度"周五郎版男のありよう"も読んでみてください。

代表作のひとつに数えられながら、個々で好き嫌いが分かれる作品。読み手を引っ張るエンターテイメント性があり、ゴツゴツとした描写も抜群だ。

しかし…山本周五郎は非常に厳しい人生観の持ち主だったのではないか。作品の名フレーズを集めた「泣き言はいわない」を読むとそんな気がしてくる。そして、「ながい坂」は山本周五郎の人生観がもっとも極端な形で現れた作品であると思う。その体現者である主人公の三浦主水正に感情移入できるかどうかが評価の分かれ目か。

そういう意味では山本周五郎入門としてはおすすめできない。何作か読んだあと、作者の人生観に共感できるようであれば強くお勧めしたい。

　山本周五郎の三大長編小説のひとつであるこの「ながい坂」。「樅の木は残った」から派生して、一つは「虚空遍歴」に、もう一つは「ながい坂」となった感じ。
　主人公である三浦主水正の半生を綴ったこの作品は、個人的には山本周五郎最高傑作であると思います。しかし、内容が思いだけに好き嫌いも分かれるかもしれません。しかし、内容の重さにしては、全体的な流れの疾走感や読後の爽快感は他の時代小説家と比べても抜きん出ています。
　作者自身も若いころは文壇から無視され続けてきたと言う経歴を持ち、主人公と何か共通するところもあります。周五郎は物語に自身を投影することが少ない作家だけにこの作品における意味は小さなものではないのではないでしょうか？
　下巻へと続く長編ですが読みはじめると止まらずにガンガンと引き込まれていきます。周五郎の入門書としては薦めることは出来ませんが、一回は読んでおいて損はしない傑作です。周五郎入門としては「さぶ」なんかがいいと思います。
