かわいらしい「みずぐるま」時の流れのはかなさを語る「葦は見ていた」倦怠期の夫婦の機微を描く「並木河岸」をはじめ佳品が目白押しだ。表題作おさんは物語の構成や語り口が村上龍を思わせる鋭い作品。はるか40年以上前に、こんな小説があったのである。おさんは周五郎作品にしばしば顔を出す、日本婦道記と対極にあるような魅力ある悪女。悪女を魅力的に描くのも周五郎の真骨頂であろう。ただ「~とおさんは言った」とある部分「父さん」かと思って笑ってしまった。

おさんもするどい男女の機微を描いているが、私が一押しなのは幸せのはかなさと不思議さを描く「その木戸を通って」、これにはまいった。時代小説とか、そういうジャンルを超えている。これはおすすめです！幸せとか、平穏な日常が如何にはかない基盤に成り立っているか、どんなにかけがいのないものか。最後に残った幼い娘の歌う童歌の余韻が泣かせる。

表題作「おさん」、九つの短編集。「おさん」には男女の繋がりから人を愛することの深さを考えさせられる。他の作品にも男と女が出てきて様々な人間模様が描かれている。「葦はみていた」の男と女の関係は興味深く、「偸盗」には抱腹絶倒し、「饒舌過ぎる」にも女性への男の感情が友情を通じて描かれている。真剣に描かれる人間像、心の中もさることながら、笑いを誘う作品に親しみを感じます。

　この本の中には、全部で10の短編が収録されているが、それのどれもが素晴らしい。その全てについての感想を書いてみたいがここでは、「おさん」だけにする。

　本当に大切なものは失ったときに初めて気づく。みたいなことって多いよね。その大切なものってのは、物に限らず、言葉だったり、人だったり、ペットだったりする。arloも犬飼ってるけど、なでられるのが好きでよく、頭を手のところに持ってきたりするんだよね。まっその時、忙しくてもできるだけ、撫でてやるようにしてる。それが、撫でるの最後かもしれないから。オレが、犬がどうなるかなんてわからないんだよ、これから先。人との付き合いにおいては、外的要因もだけでなく、心の問題もあるから、接し方も、もっと神経質になる。しかし、その神経質さがある時、人生の邪魔をすることもある。そんな時は相手を思う気持ち、相手の立場になって考えることが大事になってくるのでは。恋っていいもんだね。
