この作品の中には多くの貧しき人々が出てくる。『プ-ルのある家』は今の日本人が何処かに置き忘れてきたかのような優しさに包まれていた。現実に目をそむける父親と、物乞いに走る少年。屈辱とひもじさの毎日。しかし、少年は何故か幸せそうだった・・・。心が満ちるとは何なのかを、改めて問いかける小説である。涙をたくさん流したい人はどうぞお読みになって下さい。

この作品には、１５の物語がある。もっとも泣けたのが「プールのある家」だった。失意の中でかろうじて生きている父親。そばに小さく寄り添う少年。父親に愛されたくて物乞いにはしる。ひもじく、頼れるのはこの父親だけ。それでも、少年は幸せだった・・・。今、多くの日本人が置き忘れたもの。何に心が包まれたいですかと、問われている様でした。

物事をいろんな面から見るということはとても大切なことだと思う。正しいことも、ある面から見れば正しくないかもしれない。その中に自分の判断基準をどこに置くかが個性だ。多面から物事を見るということは、他人の視点で見ることにもつながり、それで周五郎の小説はしぜん、あたたかみを感じるのだろう。この小説は様々な人生を多面でカットしたダイヤのようにきらきらしているように、私にはみえる。　
　開高健の解説より・・「季節のない街は解説を必要とする作品ではありません。こころ滅びる夜にゆっくりと読まるべきものの一つですが、文章の背後のそれほど遠くない場所につつましくかくされたものを読みとる静かな眼、この世のにがさに多少なりとも訓練を受けたことのある人なら誰にでもわかる!作品と思えます。」さすが、美しい解説文でございます！でも「こころ滅びる夜」なんて、こんな荒れた現代にはぴったりかもしれない。
