周五郎の作品のレビューを書こうと決意し、
小学館短篇シリーズ５作を投稿しました。
新潮文庫２１冊を手元に揃え、うち１８冊読破、
順々にレビューを増やそうと企んでいます。

周五郎を読んでいると、
生きるとは何かを考えさせられます。
生きる難しさを痛感させられます。
生きる意味を真剣に悩まされます。

生きるとは…深いのです。
その最も鋭い指摘が刺さるのが「橋の下」です。

庶民にスポットライトをあてる周五郎、
何気ない日常を上手く切り取って作品にしています。
見事と声高に叫びたくなる場面も多々あります。

生きるとは…必死なのです。
誰もが必死に生きています。

この世に生を賜り歩む人生は偶然ではないのです。
この肉体滅びるまでの数十年間は儚いのです。
しかし魂は不滅、永遠に続く形のない自分です。
悪に染まる人生を終えたとしても…また悪です。
人間と生まれた喜びも無にする行為は自虐です。

精一杯の自分でいいのです。
無理や背伸びは入りません。
その人、その人の身の丈に合った日々が大事です。

しかし、この肉体での人生は一度きりです。
そう思うと恋する炎もまっしぐらに突き進みたい。
今の自分の気持を素直に表現することも大事です。
「あー、楽しかった」そう言える人生にしたいです。

永いあいだ山本周五郎を読むことができなかた。２０代か３０代の初めのころ「おそるおそる」評価の高い（たしか「橋の下」だったか）短編を読んだが理解することはできなかった。本とはまさに出会い。その後私に山本周五郎の文庫本をつづけて５０冊ほど読むことにさせた、そのきっかけの一編がこの文庫所収の「水戸梅譜」である。いま読めばきっと甘いところに目がいくのかもしれない。だが他家の階（きざはし）でいきなり果てるという衝撃的な設定（いま思えば古今東西の古典的悲劇はみなこの結構をもつ）に打たれた。たとえば『ロミオとジュリエット』、相手の死を確認することもできたのではないかと思うのはつまらない見方である。恋に殉ずる、というのは、つねに相手の思いにさきがけて、何か取り返しのつかぬことを先行的に決意して実行してしまう、その人間の悲劇的な存在の仕方に根源をもつ。根っからの読み手はきっと違う解釈をもつのだろうが、これが正直、私の感想である。

氏の作品は“武家もの”“下町もの”“岡場所もの”“不思議小説”などに分類されるそうですが、この本にも書名の『日々平安』を含め11の短編が集められています。『橋の下』は話が旨すぎるよと思う反面、人生は出会いだとも思います。何気なく人と接しているのですが、相手の言葉の内に、ハッとするものを見つけることはよくあることです。思うように行かないと思う時、それを受けとめるゆとりがあれば、道は開けていくのだとも思えます。「お茶」をすすめてくれる方がいるとき、ちょっと相手の言葉に耳を傾けてみたいと思います。『末っ子』もなかなですし、『水戸梅譜』：心持もシャンとします。
