　　高度経済成長下の日本で花形の職業とされた商社マン。ただ、世界を舞台に活躍するといったイメージがつきまとう彼らにも家族があり、日々の生活で普通の悩みが湧き、世の大半のサラリーマンが抱くようなさまざまな葛藤がある。

　　商社マンの沖は、社内では「戦列外」とみなされている京都支店長に配属された。社長や相談役の接待が主要な任務であるこの肩書きをまとい、鬱屈した日々を送る。若いころ開発輸入のために汗水たらして開墾したインドネシア・スマトラ島のとうもろこし畑に今も思いをはせ、そのとうもろこしを飼料にした養豚場の建設事業計画はいまだあきらめきれない。長く暖めていた夢と現在の自分のありさまの間で葛藤していると、ある日、息子の忍がバイクで事故を起こし不運にも左足!!切断の憂き目に遭う。かつて米国の片田舎の小さな町、ツーソンに駐在していたころまだ幼かった娘、あけみは日本語が不自由だ。海外駐在中に苦労をかけたうえ、日本に戻るやいなや東京と京都で離れ離れになってしまった妻、和代には心では申し訳ない気持ちで一杯だが、忙しさにかまけて優しい言葉一つかけてやれない。

　　沖はただ、日々起こる煩瑣なできごとややりがいを感じられない仕事に苛立ちを覚えながらも、一人のサラリーマンとして真面目にそれらをこなしてしまう。しかし、悩みばかりを作る周囲の出来事に取り巻かれるうち、彼にとって家族とは何か、自分の人生とは一体何だろうかという問いが生まれてくる。

　　そんな主人公、沖を淡々と描き、企業戦士が思い悩む様への共感を誘うこの小説には、!!著者が彼らに対して覚える共感が一貫して流れ、暖かい眼差しがあふれている。自分の人生で何が大切か、という素朴な問いに即座に答えられる人は少ない。そんな問いにますます答えにくくなっている時代で、時を隔てても決して古びない一つの人生の物語がここにある。

「毎日が日曜日」という題名から想像していた内容とは１８０度異なる内容で、興味を惹いた本書。

商社マンの世界に沿って書かれていますが、実際はすべてのサラリーマンに向けて書かれているといっても過言ではない。仕事とプライベートの現実的な意味での線引きや、サラリーマンの孤独、現実の厳しさを小説の中で伝えています。

城山さんの社会に対する洞察眼が冴えわたった一冊。
仕事に疲れたとき、行き詰ったとき、ターニングポイントに立ったとき、この小説を読むと方向性が見えてきそうです。

商社マンだけでなく、すべての働く人に見てもらいたい企業小説の名作！

偉人伝を中心とした城山さんの本からは、一風変わった作品になっているように思われる。

高度経済成長に全力を尽くした、個々のサラリーマンの視点。出世した人の視点と出世できなかった人の視点。家族の視点。会長の視点。社長の視点、とサラリーマン組織を様々な視点から捉えている点がとても面白く参考になる。

変わるものと変わらないもの。組織に対する忠誠と、出世に対する情熱は、何十年たっても組織人としては共有できる普遍性がある。一方、現在の組織の中の「個」の在り方とは、たぶんに違いを感じられる。昭和ひとけたの人たちは、役職を超えてこの国を支えたんだなと、改めて思った。ずいぶん、個人主義になったもんだと。

ただ、カタルシスがあまりなく、主人公がいまいち出世しないのに若干不満を覚えるのは私だけだろうか。ま、題名が題名だけにそれも納得。
