城山 三郎
1927‐2007。名古屋生れ。海軍特別幹部練習生として終戦を迎えた。一橋大卒業後、愛知学芸大に奉職、景気論等を担当。1957(昭和32)年、『輸出』により文学界新人賞、翌年『総会屋錦城』で直木賞を受け、経済小説の開拓者となる。吉川英治文学賞、毎日出版文化賞受賞の『落日燃ゆ』や『毎日が日曜日』『もう、きみには頼まない』『指揮官たちの特攻―幸福は花びらのごとく―』等、多彩な作品群は幅広い読者を持つ。2002(平成14)年、経済小説の分野を確立した業績で朝日賞を受賞(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

本書は、短編小説７編から構成された一冊である。

表題作となった『総会屋錦城』は、第４０回（１９５９年）直木賞受賞作品。総会屋の老練なボス錦城の姿を描き、株主総会で暗躍する者たちのからくりを明らかにする。「総会屋」という当時あまり知られていなかった存在を、一般人に認知させる契機となった作品として名高い。

また『輸出』は、商社の第一線で働く人たちの、悲惨な生活を描いた作品であり、文学新人賞（１９５８年）受賞。これを機に、城山三郎の名前が文壇の世界に登場する作品として名高い。

他にも、『メイド・イン・ジャパン』『浮上』『社長室』『事故専務』『プロペラ機・着陸待て』などの作品群を収める。

各々の小説は、現在では陳腐化した感も否めない。しかし、昭和３０年当時の状況を伺い知ることができる本書は、現在でもなお有意義であるといえるだろう。

20代後半に城山さんの「真昼のワンマンオフィス」を読んで以来、いつか読みたいと思っていた本書ですが、城山さんが亡くなってから読むことになるとは思いませんでした。

私が生まれる10数年も前、昭和32年から36年に書かれた7つの短編小説から構成されています。
各主人公達は、決して生き方が上手くなく、無骨に、自分が信じた道を歩み、ある者は死に、ある者はチャレンジを続け、ある者は閉鎖的な日常をなんとか生き延びるといった物語が紡がれており、哀愁や悲哀が漂うその生き様に共感と悲しみと虚しさを覚えました。

人生とは決して楽なものではないということを、改めて思い知らされた気がします。
彼ら主人公の生き様には、海軍の特攻隊として終戦を迎えた、城山さんの人生観、無常観が、色濃く反映されていると感じました。

個々の物語の感想は差し控えますが、20代の方には、本書や、「落日燃ゆ」、「雄気堂々」をぜひ読んで頂きたいと思います。
その辺のビジネス書、経済書、自己啓発書よりは数十倍、数百倍、人生の糧になると思います。

城山三郎はヒトの魅力を最大限に光らせる天才だと思った。この本は短編集なのだが、どのストーリーをとっても主人公やその周りの人達に惹かれ、感情移入してしまう。きっと、城山三郎は自分の世界を造れる人なのだろう。
