　他の方のレビューにもあるように旧版の文庫の推薦文で三島由紀夫はこの本を戦後の最も重要な日本文学の一つに挙げ、これこそ小説と評価した。市民的な意味を持った完成された文学とも言っていたような気がする。ともかく、あの三島由紀夫が手放しでこの本をベタ褒めしていた訳である。読む前はあまりの褒め言葉に『買い被りすぎたんじゃないか』という気も起こさせたが、一読してこれらの評価が文庫の売り上げを伸ばすための下らないお世辞文句ではないことは簡単に分かった。真に市民的な意味を持ち得た小説、これだけの文句を眺めているだけではどんな小説なのかは分からないが、読んでみると三島由紀夫が推薦文を通して言いたかった事が分かってくる。
　体裁からして、少なくとも自分が読んできた本の中では一種特別なものである。普通小説などと言えば主人公が一人乃至二三人いてそれらが軸になって進むが、この小説では楡基一郎が建てた病院を軸として物語が展開する。病院に生きる人々の考え方や言動、逆らえない運命などを細やかに描写していっているのだ。関東大震災、戦時空襲などの災害を挟み、各がどう変わっていくのかも良く書かれていた。楡病院年代記という感じだろうか。栄えたり、衰えたりを繰返す病院に左右される人々の空しさも、悲しさも実にうまい。何十人もの視線で展開してそれぞれが個性を失わないのも特筆すべき点だろう。構成のうまさという点では自分の中でも最高峰だ。
　長い小説だがあっという間に読めたような気がする。大きく心揺さぶられるシーンは少ないが、文学に親しんできた人ならきっとこの小説の味が分かるだろうと思う。是非読んでいただきたい。

戦前の東京に成立し、消えようとしている山の手族と言うブルジョワ階級の年代記。著者の祖父からはじまる精神科医の一族とその病院を描く事により、20世紀前半の日本をも描く。著者固有の上品なユーモアが基調にあり、登場人物たちも魅力あふれる。特に初代院長楡基一郎は忘れ難い印象を残す。トーマス・マンの「ブッデンブローグ家の人々」に影響されている、と言われるがいまや日本の小説を代表する一冊だと思う。

北杜夫って本当に天真爛漫で可愛いです。本当にいいところのお坊ちゃまです。それに自称「患者にして医者」であるところの躁鬱作家の面目躍如のこの大作。軽躁状態じゃなくちゃこれだけの枚数はかけません。でも、精神的にハイになっちゃったからって、作家を侮ってはいけません。かのゲーテも躁鬱にしてリウマチ患者でした。マンが「ワイマルのロッテ」で朝はご機嫌の悪いゲーテを面白可笑しく描いています。ゲーテが躁鬱だったのは夜中に詩句が夢に浮かんで、飛び起きてペンを掴んで書き留めた？というエピソードからも窺い知れます。北杜夫が尊敬するドイツの文豪と同じ病歴であるのは我が日本文学の誇りでもあります。

この破天荒な一家の物語。斎藤茂吉も面白いけど、奥さんが最高です。マンの「ブッテンブローグ」を凌いで余りあります。何をやっても漫画になってしまう北杜夫先生。本当に恵まれた才能。そして人柄です。
