大江健三郎が、神とか宗教に頼らずに「魂のこと」を扱った作品。
この小説を読んで私が考えたのは、過ちや後悔に執着せず前向きに生きるためには、しっかり、自分の頭で考えて心の整理をすることが重要ということ。
たしかに宗教によって救われる者も多いだろう。
しかし「神」は人々を思考停止させる装置になり得るし、宗教は活動面に針が振れてしまうと目的を見失う恐れがあるので、人々が宗教で本当に救われているのか疑問だ。
やはり、一つひとつ自分の頭で考えて解決していかないと救いはないと私は考える。
その教科書はないが、この小説で引用されている多くの言葉はその助けになる。

ひとり夜空を見上げる際、私は不幸であったと思うことがある。私に存在自体が意味づけられず、昔呟いた早く死にたいという言葉が蘇る。私は良い生き方をしてこなかったし、それは定められた運命だと思っている。自らの存在を疑わない人間は一生幸福のまま死んでいくものだと思っていた。洗礼者ヨハネはキリストの道を準備するため荒野に現れた。キリストは神を信じれば永遠の命が得られると説いた。この無意味だった私の転換が救い主であるギー兄さんを支えるためだとしたら私の人生はどのような意味を持つこととなるのだろうか。それは私にはわからないが、転換は生き方の根幹として意味づけられたこととなった。

救い主と看做されたギー兄さんは己の奇跡的な治癒能力を懐疑しながらも、救いを求める人々に真摯な対応をする。重病の少年カジはギー兄さんとの対話の中で魂(精神)の安堵を得ていく。しかし、人々の求める救いは病気が治るというようなもっと可視的なことであった…。この物語を綴る両性具有のサッチャンの言葉を借りれば、村人たちはギー兄さんを救い主として「発見」しただけだった。「発見」だけでなく「理解」と「受容」を伴って初めて救う人と救われる人の関係は成り立つのであろう。特異な体験からギー兄さんを救う人として受容したサッチャンとギー兄さんの新たな活動が第二部へと続く。
