うまく生きていくことが出来ない人物が主人公、だから私は読んでしまう、そこに登場しているのは私自身だから。ほんの小さな出来事が、私を形成した世間をうまく生きていくためのプログラムを変えてしまった。引きずられるように入り込まされたように見えるが、実は自ら歩きだしていた。
自らを危機に晒す私、私に中にもう一人の私の存在を知り躊躇する私、制御できない私にもうやめろと叫びながら本を読んでいる私、複数の私がそれぞれの異次元で同時に存在している。私は体験、知識を通じて私像を創造したが、私に中に眠る私を私は知らないことが恐い。この物語は無限の結末のほんの一例に過ぎない。私の結末はどうなるのか、私は小市民である故小説の中で物語を繰り広げるしかないのだ。

私は「セヴンティーン」を氏の最高傑作と信じて疑いません。これほどコミカルにかつ情熱的に青春時代のルサンチマンが、描かれた作品を寡聞にして知りません。これを読むと、なぜか私は元気が出てきます。

5.0 out of 5 stars 前編『セヴンティーン』、後編『政治少年死す』, 2004/2/29
　数々の大江作品の中でもこの『セヴンティーン』が持つ迫力は傑出している。緊張感、疾走感、並みではない。一字たりとも"ぬるい"部分がないのである。
　劣等感にまみれ自慰行為にふける17歳の少年が、右翼という鉄の鎧をまとい、世界に逆襲しながら、やがて破滅に至るまでを描いたこの作品は、実際に起きた事件をモチーフにしている。だが、現実に起きたことを土台にすれば誰でもこのように書けるかというと、決してそうではない。作者の想像力によって現実を「異化」するという過程を経てのみ、このような作品となりうるのである。
　ちなみにこの作品はこれだけで完結しない。後半にあたる『政治少年死す』は、『文學界』（文藝春秋社）の1961年2月号（P.8〜P.47）に掲載されたが、事情により発禁となり、書店では入手不可能。ただし、大きめの図書館へ行けば上記雑誌を閲覧・複写することはできる。
　読まずにはいられなくなるはずだ。
