　奇想天外というか、卓抜というか、これまでの日本の作家にはとうてい想像することもできない発想で戦争を扱っている。撃墜した敵機からパラシュートで降りて来た黒人兵士を、村人が珍しい動物のように飼育する。米軍への劣等感もそのたくましさへの怖れも、人間的な共感も表現されている。そして子供たちとの間には現実社会のすべての掟を超えた親しさが通う。非常に意識的な計算された巧妙な作品であるが、不思議な詩情があり童話的な美しさがある。独自の完結した宇宙をもった完璧の芸術作品と言ってもよい。芥川賞受賞作。

もう１０年以上前だ。
大学の時にこの短編集を読んだ衝撃は今だに忘れられない。
「傍観者の欺瞞」といったキャッチだったが、その凄みと痛みは
読む者の魂を鷲づかみする圧倒的な力だった。
バスの中での恥辱をえぐられる男性。療養所の少年への扇動と裏切り。
その完成度も含め、脱帽だった。

畑正憲氏（ムツゴロウさん）が、東大在学中に大江の初作が東大新聞に
掲載され、「同じ大学にこんな凄い奴がいる」と、それを読んで作家を
あきらめた、と奥様との書簡集に書かれていたが、その気持ちがよくわかる。
ノーベル文学賞受賞からやけに「貴重品扱い」され、ここ１０数年の
文体の変化でとっつきにくさが大江健三郎が纏うイメージだが、

本当の原点に立ち戻って、ドストエフスキーと拮抗する位のど偉い長編
を書いてほしい。
本当に才能ある「作家」なのだから。

　大江健三郎は私にとってあまり好きな作家ではないし、彼の政治的な傾向にも同意しかねる部分が多いのだが、彼の作品群が極めて高い質を誇っているのは疑いの無い事実だと考えている。本書を読み、あらためて大江の才能に圧倒された感がある。

　本書に収められた短編はいずれも戦後、あるいは戦中の日本の閉塞感を描いたものである。当時の日本の政治状況を何気なく小説に盛り込ませることでシナリオにリアリティを持たせることで、読者を小説が描く閉塞感を追体験するように導くことに見事に成功している。動揺を受けずに本書を読み通すことができる人はいないのではないか。激しく心を揺さぶるものが文学だとすれば、本書は私が随分久しぶりに読んだ文学だということになる。

　特に、米兵とのつながりを描いた作品群は極めて秀逸。米兵による安全を享受してきた戦後日本、そして日本人の中に潜む、屈折した感情、歪みを見事に描き出している。大江が描いている日本、そして日本人は、決して過去のものではないのである。
