主人公に惚れた。
どの人物が実在したとか、歴史がどうとかは些細な事で
ひたすら魅力的なベルトラン・デュ・ゲクランという愛すべき傑物の
はためく裾になんとかつかまりふりまわされつつ
あきれてみたり怒ってみたり笑ったり唖然としたりするうちに
忘れがたい存在として心に居座っている事に
ラストで気づくのだった。
傑作。

~こうした類いの出世物語は痛快である。
しかもその舞台が中世フランスと、私たちがあまり知り得ない世界のことであり、そのミステリアスさが想像を逞しくさせる。

歴史小説家の力量は、その文章で如何に読者の想像力を掻き立てられるかという、まさにその一点にかかっている。戦闘シーンはそのものに勢いがあるので、余計な装飾は野暮になる。「一流」で~~あるかどうかは、戦闘以外のシーンの描かれ方に出る。

歴史を「事実よりそれらしく見せる」（小説のみに許される）ウソのつきかたが不自然で、明らかに目立ってしまっている。これでは流れに乗って読んでいるほうは興醒めしてしまう。~

休日。朝なぜか早く目を覚ます。久しぶりに天気がよく、気持ちのいい朝だった。昨晩の飲み残しのワインを飲みながら、朝から読書三昧。

佐藤賢一『双頭の鷲（上・下）』新潮文庫を読み終えた。すごく面白い。北上次郎が解説で書いていたが、司馬遼太郎の戦国物に似ている。魅力的な登場人物、血沸き肉踊る戦闘シーン、一気に読ませた。

佐藤賢一の作品の中でも、読んだスピードは一番かも。『二人のガスコン』とは違い、主人公も知らなかったが、かえって先入観がなく、よかったのかもしれない。
