のちに『賢王』と称されるシャルル５世と貧乏騎士からフランス大元帥にのし上がった『軍神』ベルトラン・デュ・ゲクラン―――
二人の天才が織り成す仏歴史巨編！

家族の愛に見放された少年、ベルトラン・デュ・ゲクランは類稀なる戦術眼と鷲鼻の持ち主。
天衣無縫な彼に占い師はこう占う。
「この男子、人知の及ばぬ栄光の定めを授かりて、系譜に未踏の輝きを得ん。天下に無二の人となり、百合の花に飾られたる、未曾有の名誉を楽しまん。遠くエルサレムの果てにさえ、名を轟かせるに至るなり」
物語はそんな彼とシャルル５世との出会いにより始まり、フランス大元帥、そして『軍神』と崇められるまでの人生を軸に進むが、そんな彼の人生の狭間で、従兄弟のエマヌエル・デュ・ゲクラン、弟のオリヴィエ・デュ・ゲクラン、運命の占いを授けた後の妻ティファーヌ･ラグネルらの愛情・嫉妬・憎悪を見事に描いている。
とはいっても、暗い話ではなく、彼の破天荒な性格と出世（？）ぶりが読者を大いに楽しませてくれる。
さながら「フランス版 秀吉」といったところかな。
欧州歴史の興味のなかった自分でも十分に楽しめた一冊です！

実はこの本を最初に手に取ったときは、がっかりでした。
表紙に描かれているのが馬に乗ったぶっさいくなオッサンで、
その男が軍事の天才で、フランスの英雄だというのです。

「こんなぶっさいくな英雄がいてたまるものか」
と思いました。正直なところ。

この男、ベルトラン・デュ・ゲクランというのですが

国王の御前にあっても呆けた顔で鼻をほじるし、
いちおう貴族なのに３０歳過ぎても楽しそうにうんこで遊ぶし、
とにかく常識が無いというか破天荒な人物です。
でも、戦の天才。

読み進めるにつれ、彼のこの破天荒な性格は、
ぶさいくな容姿と密接な関わりがあることが明らかになってきます。
それは彼の生い立ちの話なんですが、悲しい逸話です。

基本的に史実なので、ある意味ではリアル。
前半で輝かしい英雄として描かれていた人物が、
後半になってめっきがはがれて見る影も無くなったり、
最初はすごく悪いやつだったのに、途中から改心したと思ったら
深い事情があって実はそういうことではなかったり。

三人の天才が出てきます。

ベルトラン、ベルトランの主君シャルル５世王、ライバルのグライー。
ベルトランとグライーは戦の天才。
シャルル５世の鮮やかな政治的駆け引きも、非常に見ものです。

西洋史専攻の出身の著者佐藤氏は十数年の一人の本格的西洋歴史小説家の逸材。主人公デュ・ゲクランの名前はこの本で始めて知ったが、英仏の百年戦争時の伝説の無敵将軍。下劣で粗野や素行の主人公は戦のたびにその力量を発揮していく。プロットはデュ・ゲクランの活躍と並行して、フランス王朝をシャルル５世中心に華麗に描いていく。フランスの煮込みのような泥臭くてはまりそうな庶民の料理の匂いとブランドの香水に眩暈のしそうな、清濁まざった感触が五感を刺激する。多重に並行展開する章構成と表現の巧みさに、著者の力量を納得させる。上巻ではこの二人が最強のペアとなるまでを描く。
