タイで豪快に活躍した山田長政を描いています。 知謀・政略・謀反・暗殺・・どろどろしたアユタヤ王朝を舞台に、山田長政が大活躍します。 ゼロから力を求めてのしあがってゆく山田長政の行く末は・・・。

遠藤周作の歴史物小説は、視点が独特で楽しめるものが多いのですが、エンタテイメント作品としては、これがイチオシです。めくるめく冒険活劇の中にも、遠藤周作らしい哲学的・宗教的な問題も盛り込まれていて、単に軽いだけの小説で終わっていないところも魅力です。

「地上の王国」と「天の王国」--異なる王国にたどり着くべく奮闘する実在した二人の日本人を描いています。前者・山田長政は日本での天下取りに見切りをつけ、タイに渡り外国人傭兵として活躍、権力をつけます。後者のペドロ岐部は、自分の足で遠くローマを目指し、神父となって帰国することを目指し、二人はタイで再会。

山田のタイでの天下取り合戦を軸に、物語は展開します。このようにタイプがまったく違う２人を主人公とし、際立たせる方法は、遠藤お得意のものです(Cf.『王妃マリーアントワネット』のマルグリットとアントワネット)が、対立の図式が明らか過ぎて、人間の感情が単純化されている気がしなくもないです。

遠藤氏の他の作品に比べ、キリスト教色が強くないので、読みやすかったのが率直な感想です。
前半の「藤蔵」と表記されている時の主人公は豪快な泥臭い男なのですが、なぜか後半にはとても繊細で臆病な人間に見える。この感情の移り変わりが読者の私には非常に不思議な感覚を覚え、思わずハマッしまいました。
私なりの解釈ですが、文庫本の裏表紙のあらすじにある「日本人とは何か〜」の答えは、武士の心や生き様などではなく、先ほど書いたような主人公の心の移り変わりに隠されているような気がします。

実際にあった話だそうですが、読み終わった後は、何やら映画を見ているような心境になっていました。実に壮大な映画でした。
