中央気象台で富士山測候所勤務等の経験を持ち、「山」，「雪」，「風」を知りつくしたスペシャリストとして山岳小説の分野を拓いた「新田次郎（本名　藤原寛人）（1912-1980）」の処女作で、第34回直木賞授賞作「強力伝」に「八甲田山」，「凍傷」，「おとし穴」，「山犬物語」，「孤島」を加えた6短編小説が収録。

極めて現実的に生々しく描写された人間の感情，行動に、背筋や首筋に悪寒を感じながら読み進みました。

特に「強力伝」，「八甲田山」，「凍傷」，「孤島」は実話をもとに書かれた小説で、その想像を絶する様々な出来事から、小説を読みながらにして「事実は小説よりも奇なり」という言葉を思い起こしました。

強力伝の主人公は小見山正がモデルだといわれています
富士山の強力でしたが腕を買われて白馬岳の頂上に石の台を上げることになります
175Kgの石を二つ頂上まで担ぎ上げました
すごいですね
8年前に白馬岳に登りました
頂上に石台を見つけました
こんなものを一人で担ぎ上げたのです
強力伝を書いていたころの新田次郎の筆は弱かった
嫁さんに負けてはいけないという気持ちが強すぎて不要な書き込みが多すぎる
それでも直木賞をゲットしたのは行間にあふれる情熱です
我々は新田次郎の情熱に共感し感動するのです

「新田次郎」の名はさすがに知ってはいたが、その本を初めて読んだ。
今までその名前の印象から、「堅い」感じがして全く興味が無かったのだ。

しかし、世が変わり、藤原正彦の「品格」に始まり、この人の父親は如何なる人か？
ベストセラー作家の藤原ていの夫、家族より頑なまでに仕事を優先した人物はどういう人か？と非常に興味を持ったのだ。
蓋を開けてみれば想像通り、文章から「実直さ」が読み取れます。
今回の本は、全て厳しい自然、山に関する内容。

・山にとんでもない重量の石を運ぶ
・雪山で遭難
・冬の富士山登頂観測
・狼との戦い
・山犬退治
・孤島の観測

中でも、最後の「弧島」は、環境は違えど同じサラリーマンとして多少ながらも気持ちが解かりました。

■お薦め度：★★★☆☆（さすがに、下級侍の血を引く男の文章。理路整然。ここからやんちゃ次男坊の「品格」に通づるのであるな、納得！）
