　安部公房は読者を異空間に連れ去る。別に幻想の世界を描いているわけでは何のに異空間なのである。一度読み始めると止まらなくなるのであることが多々あるが、この「密会」もそのうちのひとつ。妻がいきなり救急車で連れ去られたり、下半身が馬の男が現れたり、骨が溶けていく少女に惚れ込んだり、日常あり得ないような出来事に遭遇しながら、最後に出会うのは真の絶望？
　とにかく、この小説のさまざまな仕掛けに魅了される私（あなた？）がいるのは間違いない事実。あなたは医者ですか。それとも患者？

失踪した妻を捜し求める男の前には、卑猥で狂気にみちた医者や看護婦、患者などの立場の異なる病院の構成員たちが現れる。猜疑、嫉妬などの生々しい感情が錯綜し、苛烈で感傷的な終局へと迷路は突き進む。

これは、人間社会のシンボルである「病院」を舞台にした小説である。
神話的構造、バロック的表現が特徴的であり、そのディテールは、他の追随を許さない。 此処に描かれている肥大した性的描写も全て、人間社会に普遍的に潜む、人間関係の構造の問題を照射する光に他ならない。
これを読むと、人間とは本来からして、「健康」という概念を放棄した「患者的存在」であり、「医者」とはそこから派生した概念であることに気付く。
そして、これは、副院長のスローガンである「良き医者は良き患者である」から確信へと変わる。
また、それは、彼の哲学、「人間の歴史は逆進化の歴史」であり、「怪物というのは偉大な弱者の化身」という箇所からも窺える。
読了後は、もはや、我々人類には「退院」という救いはないのだという絶望に襲われることになるだろう。
良くて「快癒をねがうよき患者」といったところだ。
まさに地獄のユートピアであり、ユートピアの地獄でもある。
また、別な観点から論ずれば、病院の最高権威者であり、なおかつ最高責任者でもある、〈神〉の化身とも言うべき院長の不在…。
まるで、神が、人間が言語という禁断の果実を手に入れたことで性に目覚めたが故に、この世界を見放したかのような印象を受ける。
後はただ、人間の根源的な欲望であるピンク色の性欲が、そのまま剥き出しの状態で開かれる祭典が待つのみである。
此処には、明らかに人間の原罪が、あまりにも強烈に描かれているとも言える。
だが、あきらめてはいけない。
安部の言うように「絶望も認識である以上、希望の一形式」なのである。
故に、「絶望する能力に希望を託す」しかないだろう。
それにしても、やはりと驚嘆せざるを得ないのは、安部の作品は、私たちの刻一刻と変わる意識や認識によって、如何ようにも読めるということである。
私にとっては、バイブルといっても過言ではない一冊だ。
