この作品は、安部公房の中で、唯一「普遍的な高み」に達していると思います。というのは、その他の作品の、他人の顔、壁、箱男、密会、方舟さくら丸、そしてカンガルーノートといった作品は、どれも極端な「特殊」の部類に入っているからです。ですから、安部公房の作品を何か読みたい、と思っている方は、是非この作品を読んでみることをおすすめします。文学的な含みがたくさんあり、無限の広がりを見せる作品だからです。多くの比喩にも着目してみて下さい。安部公房の「実験」が、文学的に最高の高みに達したのが、「砂の女」といえるでしょう。（なお、この作品を読んで、安部公房の他の作品にも触れてみるのもよいでしょう。ただし、着想やイメージが極端に特殊化しているので、多少「砂の女」とは温度差を感じるかもしれません。しかし、そんな安部公房の世界を探険してみるのもよいと思いますよ。）

映画は遥か昔、大学生の頃に観たのですが、英国の店先でDVDが売られているのを偶然見かけ、久しぶりに原作が読みたくなって本棚から引っ張り出して読んでみた。
言葉を紙面上に紡いで芸術を描くのが文学と言うのであれば、今さらの陳腐な言い方ではあるが、この作品はまさに珠玉の文学だと思う。文学作品には難解なものも多いが、難解であることが文学作品の条件では無い。この作品は難解さを感じさせずに一気に読むこともできる。こういった強引に読み手を引きずり込むストーリー展開から、「よく出来たサスペンス」と片付ける方もいるかもしれないが、ここに描き出される人間の業、辺鄙な部落社会での不自由な幽閉生活の裏返しとして描かれる文明社会への批判、「自由」な社会の住人であるのに関わらず見失ってしまった自己の存在など、作品のメッセージをいろいろと考えながら読むべき作品であると思う。
そういう意味で一度ではなく何度でもくり返し読むことに耐えうる作品であり、読者個人の背景によって様々に共鳴できる要素を持っており、様々な解釈をさせてくれる広がりのある作品だと思う。

自分がこれまで読んだ本の中でもっともおもしろかったと言って過言がないほど圧倒的な迫力、緻密な知識、構成が絶妙なバランスをもって重畳的に織り込まれている作品。

サスペンスとしても楽しめるし、現代社会に対してありもしない希望と自由の幻想の上で成り立っているものと批判する寓意的小説として読んでも優れていると思う。砂に囲まれた家での思い通りにならない生活と望めば何でも手に入るように見える現代社会・・・優劣はどちらだ・・と・・

砂が絡み付いてくるようで、読んでる途中に何度もシャワーを浴びたくなる描写にも嫌悪感を感じながらも引き込まれていきます。
読んで損は全くなし。
